Michael Owen makes bold claim about Liverpool in the Champions League

Michael Owen believes top European clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid will be worried about facing Liverpool in the latter stages of the Champions League.

The Reds were 6-3 aggregate winners against Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in the Champions League playoff round to secure their place in the group-stage draw.

Liverpool made a disappointing start to their Group E opener following a 2-2 draw with Spanish side Sevilla on Wednesday night.

The Merseyside outfit conceded in the fifth minute following a mistake from Dejan Lovren but the home side responded with an impressive attacking display.

Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah turned the games on its head with first-half goals before the Brazil forward missed a penalty which would prove costly.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were unable to convert their attacking display into more goals and Sevilla equalised with 18 minutes to go at Anfield.

Former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker Owen believes that some of Europe’s top clubs will be worried about the prospect of facing the Reds in the latter stages of the Champions League.

“I don’t care who you are, Real Madrid or Barcelona, Liverpool have the potential to scare you,” Owen told BT Sport on Wednesday night.

“They have loads of pace. At Anfield, they can score plenty of goals.”

Liverpool lost 5-0 to Manchester City in the Premier League last weekend following Sadio Mane’s sending off.

The Reds will host Burnley in their next Premier League fixture at Anfield on Saturday.
