Bastian Schweinsteiger has taken to social media to send a special farewell message to Wayne Rooney after his transfer away from Manchester United was confirmed on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old midfielder confirmed on Tuesday that he would be leaving Old Trafford to sign for MLS side Chicago fire after finding his first team opportunities at Old Trafford severely restricted this season.

Indeed, the German did not make a single appearance for Jose Mourinho’s men in the Premier League this season.

Schweinsteiger will have been saying his goodbyes in Manchester this week and the World Cup winner used his Personal Instagram Account to send a special farewell message to Red Devils captain Rooney.

Schweinsteiger posted the picture above on his personal Instagram account and wrote the caption: “I made some very good friends in Manchester. Wishing you and the team only the best, my captain!”

Rooney will be hoping to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils return to Premier League action on 1 April with a home clash against West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford.
