The Philadelphia Eagles were busy on Monday eliminating all traces of the Chip Kelly era. Earlier in the day they sent running back DeMarco Murray To Titans and then the Eagles sent cornerback Byron Maxwell and linebacker Kiko Alonso to the Miami Dolphins.

The Eagles are expected to get draft picks in return from Miami. No trade can become official until the league’s new year starts on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.

Both of the players were part of former Eagles Coach Chip Kelly’s offseason overhaul last year. Maxwell signed a six-year, $63 million contract after spending four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Alonso, who played for Kelly at Oregon, was acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Bills for running back LeSean McCoy.

Kelly was fired last December, and former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson later was hired as the Eagles’ new coach. Executive vice president Howie Roseman regained control over personnel.

For the Eagles, the move further distances the team from the Kelly era while creating cap space. But the move would leave the team thin at cornerback, as Nolan Carroll and E.J. Biggers are both slated to become free agents on Wednesday.

In acquiring Maxwell and Alonso, Miami would be making an offseason splash under first-year head coach Adam Gase — albeit a potentially costly one. Maxwell has $11.5 million guaranteed remaining in his conract, including $8.5 million guaranteed next season. Alonso is entering the final year of his rookie deal and could be in line for an extension.
