Wales Rugby History 1970-1979

Wales National Rugby Union Team represents Wales in international rugby union tournaments. Wales governing body Welsh Rugby Union (RU) was established in 1881. Wales played their first international match against England in 1881. Welsh rugby struggled between the first and second World Wars. The International Rugby Board (KIRBY) regards Wales as a Tier One rugby nation and is ranked fourth in the world by the result of International Rugby Board on 17th October 2011.

Wales National Rugby Union Team controlled over the game in the northern hemisphere in the following decade. Wales were won nine of the ten matches against the England, eight of the ten matches against the Scots and the Irish claimed only one win and a draw in nine outings. France were the only side to compete the Welsh, winning three and drawing one of their ten games. In 1970, Wales shared the Five Nations with France, also recording their best result thus far against South Africa with a six each draw in Cardiff. It was 19 years after the success of 1952 before the sixth Grand Slam of 1971 heralded the dawn of the second 'Golden Era'. Using only 16 players in four games, the 1971 side is considered one of the greatest in Welsh rugby history. Their most notable victory of the tournament was their victory over Scotland. After a last minute try by Gerald Davies to reduce Scotland's lead to 18-17, flanker John Taylor kicked a conversion from the sideline described as "the greatest conversion since St John" to give Wales a 19-18 win.

Wales contributed more players than any other team (there were 11 Welshmen) to the British and Irish Lions that toured New Zealand that year. Those Lions became the first and only to win a series over the All Blacks. In the 1972 Five Nations Championship, Wales and Scotland refused to travel to Dublin at the height of the Troubles after receiving threats, purportedly from the IRA. The Championship remained unresolved with Wales and Ireland unbeaten. Had the game in Ireland in 1972 not been canceled, that otherwise undefeated campaign could have ended with another Grand Slam.
Although the Five Nations was a five way tie in 1973, the Welsh did defeat Australia 24–0 in Cardiff. Wales contributed six players in the victorious 1974 Lions Test side in South Africa. Wales won the Five Nations outright in 1975. In 1976, Wales won their second Grand slam of the decade. Just like the first in 1971, they only used 16 players over their four matches. They repeated the feat in 1978 and, in the process, became the first team to win three consecutive Triple Crowns. Following their final Five Nations match of 1978, both Phil Bennett and Gareth Edwards retired from rugby.

Wales National Rugby Union Team won the Five Nations with a Triple Crown in 1979. Players like Gareth Edwards, Barry John, Mervyn Davies, John Taylor, JPR Williams, Gerald Davies and John Dawes emerged to take not only Welsh rugby, but also the British game to the top of the world with some amusing performances throughout the Seventies. Other Welsh greats from this era were Phil Bennett, Geoff Wheel, Allan Martin, the Pontypool front row Charlie Faulkner, Bobby Windsor Graham Price and Steve Fenwick.
