Guru's Random Thoughts

As your Guru, I will try to at least post a "Random Thoughts" section of the blog every two weeks, recapping some of the biggest headlines recently and some things I didn't mention in other posts.

*Most Improved Player went to the Timberwolves F Kevin Love. Love, who broke a couple records with his consistent streak of double-doubles since the merger, was a clear favorite for this award. He went from 14 ppg and 11 rpg last season to explode this season averaging 20 ppg and 15 rpg. He was a fill-in for All Star Weekend and he definitely deserved to be there. He obviously does not have a whole lot of help around him, the T'Wolves finishing in the bottom 5 of the NBA this year in terms of record.

*Ryan Braun gets a new deal through the year 2020, with over 145 million guaranteed. He is only one of two players in MLB to be tied up till the year 2020, the other being Troy Tulowitzki from the Colorado ROckies. Braun has been one of the most consistent players in all of baseball for the last 2-3 years, and is rewarded with being the Brewer with the big deal. This almost seals up the fate of Prince Fielder, however. With Braun getting this much money, the big and powerful 1st basemen will likely not be signed after this year by the Brewers.

*NBA Playoffs are going to be fun. There are a lot of surprising teams tied up after two games in the NBA Playoffs, with all of the lower seeds showing some real promise going back to the lower seeded teams' home floor starting tonight at 7:00. The tenacity and passion for the game is definitely showing here early in the NBA Playoffs.

*The NFL draft is only a week away. Who will be the #1 overall pick. A lot of people are thinking that the Carolina Panthers will go Cameron Newton with the first pick. I don't think that is the right chouce for a team who just drafted a young, promising QB in Jimmy Clausen last year early in their draft. Time will tell. It should be an exciting couple of days for all 32 teams in the NFL come next week, even amid all of the lock-out talks.

*Excited for NCAA Football yet? I am. All this talk about the draft and all our the promising upcoming NFL superstars is making me think about who in this years NCAA Football year will break out and become a potential star in the NFL. Oklahoma seems to be the early favorite by all of the self-proclaimed so-call "experts". This one might be closer to the truth, however, with a strong Sooner team being assembled for this next season led by Big 12 standout Landry Jones.

*Will the Big Ten become the new powerhouse in football with Nebraska joining the conference?
