Bruins lock up McAvoy on eight-year, $76M deal

The Boston Bruins locked up defenseman Charlie McAvoy with an eight-year contract extension that carries an average annual value of $9.5 million, the team announced Friday.

McAvoy is in the final season of a three-year contract with a $4.9-million AAV. The new pact begins in 2022-23.

McAvoy’s $9.5-million AAV puts him ties him with Seth Jones as the fourth-highest-paid blueiner, behind only Erik Karlsson, Drew Doughty, and Zach Werenski, per CapFriendly. It’s also the richest contract in Bruins franchise history.

McAvoy finished fifth in Norris Trophy voting last season after recording 30 points (three short of setting a career-high) in just 51 games. His 0.59 points per game was a personal best.
