Blake Wheeler, Mark Scheifele were major reasons Patrik Laine wanted out of Winnipeg

Former 2nd overall pick Patrik Laine’s time in Winnipeg was marked with highs and lows to say the least. Laine is obviously a player loaded with talent, but for whatever reason, seemed disinterested in playing for the Jets, and his trade requests were well-documented. Now that he’s been traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets, a report out of his home country of Finland claims Winnipeg captain Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele were major forces behind Laine’s unrest.

According to the report by Iltalehti.fi, “Wheeler felt his position on the right side of the No. 1 line was threatened because Laine was originally the right winger. Wheeler was also not enthusiastic that Laine would become a young man who would become almost as popular in Winnipeg as Teemu Selänne.”

“Scheifele, who was on the team captain’s leash, made it clear to everyone that he wanted to play with Wheeler,” the report continued.

“Wheeler and Scheifele threw sand at Laine’s skates in almost every possible way. Wheeler in particular was a master at speaking behind the back of the young Finnish man for things he certainly did not want in public.”
