Jayson Mama Wins WBO Oriental Youth Flyweight Title

GEN. SANTOS CITY -- Hometown favorite Jayson Mama pummeled to submission Michael Camelion of Bukidnon via a technical knockout in the 9th round to capture the vacant WBO Oriental Youth Flyweight title on Sunday night at the Gaisano Mall Atrium.

International referee Atty. Danrex Tapdasan stopped the fight in 1:43 of Round 9 after Camelion already had suffered too much punishment from Mama, who was connecting left-right combinations since the start of the title fight.

Mama was simply quicker and clever than Camelion. The pride of General Santos City was landing his quick jabs and body shots then would immediately step back to elude a counter by Camelion.

“Finally my hardwork in boxing has paid off. This is just the start of my dream for my family" said the 20-year old Mama, a former amateur standout of General Santos City.

Mama won the light flyweight gold medal in the 2015 Palarong Pambansa in Tagum to earn the Best Boxer award. He also qualified in the Philippine National Games from the Mindanao Leg but turned pro on that same year by joining the Sanman Boxing Stable to help support his family.

“I’m very happy with Jason’s performance. He was patient and took his time. (With a) couple of more fights, I think he is ready for the top flyweights in the wold,” said Sanman Chief Executive Officer Jim Claude Manangquil.

His twin brother Jervin Mama also saw action in the undercard of the “Brawl at the Mall: 10th Edition”.

Jerwin beat the veteran Romulo Ramayan by a TKO during the rest period of the 6th round to remain unbeaten with four straight wins and three by knockouts.

In the main supporting bout, WBF Intercontinental super flyweight champion Jake Bornea landed solid body shots to stop Jestoni Makiputin in 2:43 of Round 2.

Bornea, also a former WBO Asia Pacific Youth Flyweight champion from Sanman-Amoy gym improved his record to 13 wins with 7 knockouts and 2 losses and no draw.

Reigning interim OPBF bantamweight title holder Ben Manangquil also connected powerful body shots to stop Alvin Bais in the rest period of Round 2 for his 6th straight win to improve his record to 16W-1L-2D, 4 KOs.

New Sanman fighter Joey Canoy made his presence felt infront of his fellow Generals by knocking out Bukidnon’s Rodel Tejares in 2:27 of Round 3.

“Masaya po ako sa unang laban ko sa Sanman,” said Canoy, a former member of the Gensan amateur boxing team before he turned pro in Cebu under the Wakee Salud Stable.

Canoy, a 24-year old southpaw, now has 14 wins with 7 knockouts, 3 losses and 1 draw.  He is managed by Coco Tan, brother of Sanman Promotions chief finance officer Dexter “Wang Yu” Tan.

Three foreign fighters were also featured in the boxing card held in coordination with the ….
American-Mexican Daniel Placeres from Miami, Florida knocked out JP Macadumpis of Balot Island in 1:04 of Round 2 to remain unbeaten with six straight wins and five knockouts.

Malaysian Muhammad Shehran of Kuala Lumpur used his boxing skills en route to a convincing unanimous decision over Surigao’s Richard Betos in their 6-rounder bout.

The other results of the undercard:
