Caro Mike,

Ao começar a escrever-te esta carta, sinto que é algo que quero fazer há imenso tempo, talvez desde a minha pré-adolescência quando te “conheci”, ao ouvir o meu primo falar das tuas performances no Havai, ainda sem saber nada sobre Bodyboard.
Não fazia ideia onde era o Havai, mas uma coisa já sabia, tu eras o rei de Pipeline, a maior e mais perigosa onda do mundo, pensava eu naquela altura, uma espécie de lenda marítima ao melhor estilo de Júlio Verne, em que tu eras surgias como herói destemido.

Estas estórias começaram a despertar em mim um fascínio cada vez maior pelo Bodyboard, até me iniciar finalmente na modalidade e acompanhar o teu incrível percurso até aos dias de hoje.

Se me dissessem que aos 52 anos de idade, ainda te veria competir ao mais alto nível, contra os melhores do mundo, possivelmente não acreditaria. Se me dissessem que aos 52 anos, te veria a descer uma onda gigante na Nazaré, diria que estavam loucos, que já não tinhas energia para essas andanças. Como estava enganado.

Duvidar do Rei será para sempre um erro crasso e nunca mais o voltarei a fazer. Afinal, tu és o mesmo gajo que surfa Pipe tão à vontade, como se estivesses a fazer compras num centro comercial, o mesmo gajo que mandou um tubo de Bodyboard em Jaws, o primeiro a descer Teahupoo numa prancha de Bodyboard, o primeiro bodyboarder a constar numa revista de Surf, como um dos melhores surfistas mundiais e a lista continua…

Por tudo isto, pela tua humildade, pela tua afabilidade, por representares o nosso desporto desde a sua origem, tu és e continuarás para sempre a ser o Rei, a figura de proa e o representante máximo do Bodyboard e nós humildes bodyboarders, só temos a agradecer-te por isso, por tudo o que tens feito tendo em vista a evolução do desporto.

Mike, dou-te a minha palavra de honra, se me disserem que aos 65 anos vais ser campeão mundial de Bodyboard pela 10ª vez, sou o primeiro a assinar por baixo.

Dear Mike,

Writing this letter to you, feels like something I´ve wanted to do for a long time, perhaps since my early teens, when I´ve “met” you, even without knowing anything about Bodyboarding, while hearing my cousin talk about your incredible stunts in Hawaii.

I had no idea where Hawaii was, but one thing I already knew back then, you were the king of Pipeline, the biggest and most dangerous wave in the world, thought I at the time. Kind of a Jules Verne nautical myth, with you in the role of the fearless hero.

These stories began to develop in me a greater fascination for Bodyboarding, the sport that I´ve chosen back then, tracking alongside your amazing journey to the present day.

If someone told me that you would be competing, at the highest level, against the world´s best Bodyboarding athletes, at age 52, probably I would not believe. If someone told me that at I would witness Mike Stewart, at age 52, charging giant waves at Nazaré, I would say they were crazy, I would say that you had no longer stamina for these great achievements. How I was mistaken…

Doubting the King was a huge mistake, and something that I´m going to regret forever. After all, you´re the same guy that surfs the world´s most dangerous wave so comfortably like a walk in the park, the same guy that goes for the barrel at Jaws, the first dropping Teahupoo on a Bodyboard, the first Bodyboarder to be considered one of the world´s best surfers on a Surfing mag, and the list goes on and on…

For all these reasons, for your kindness, for your humbleness, for representing the sport from the start, you are and you will continue to be the King. The prominent figure in the game, and the most remarkable water man that ever existed. We, humble bodyboarders, just have to acknowledge and be grateful, for all that you have done looking forward the evolution of the sport.

Mike, I give you my word. If someone tells me that you´ll be the World Bodyboard Champion for the 10th time at age 65, I´m the first to sign off!
