Inter Disappointing In Lose To Manchester United

A disappointing Inter side lost to Manchester United 1-0 on Saturday in the International Champions Cup game, but the scoreline flattered Inter as United hit the post twice and forced Samir Handanovic into several good saves.

This was Antonio Conte’s first defeat on the Inter bench and he still had no genuine strikers at his disposal in Singapore, as Lautaro Martinez needed extra rest after the Copa America and Mauro Icardi has been frozen out along with Radja Nainggolan.

The lack of strikers has to worry Conte as every time the ball was cleared to an Inter attacker, they lost possession and another Man United attack began.

Manchester United poured forward from the start and dominated possession, but Samir Handanovic held firm on Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, rushing off his line to intercept when the offside trap failed, his gloves stung by Paul Pogba from distance.

Inter were above all dangerous from set plays, as David De Gea completely flapped at two crosses to the back post, but Danilo D’Ambrosio was twice unable to take full advantage.

D’Ambrosio was decisive at the other end, performing a goal-line clearance to deny Jesse Lingard on the counter-attack after the restart.

Nemanja Matic saw his header thump the upright on a corner, then Handanovic at full stretch fingertipped a Pogba angled drive away, but Inter were again threatening from a dead-ball situation, as D’Ambrosio’s header was cleared off the line by Axel Tuanzebe.

The deadlock was finally broken from a set play, as Handanovic parried an Ashley Young free kick, but Mason Greenwood got on the end of the rebound, cut inside and curled into the far bottom corner from a tight angle.

Manchester United hit the woodwork again with Greenwood, who got in front of Andrea Ranocchia to meet a Chong cross from the left and clipped the crossbar with his volley.

Nicolò Barella made his Nerazzurri debut in the final minutes, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were visibly in better shape at this early stage of pre-season.

Inter: Handanovic; D’Ambrosio, De Vrij (Ranocchia 73), Skriniar; Candreva (Agoume 83, Gagliardini (Barella 73), Brozovic (Borja Valero 83), Sensi (Joao Mario 73), Dalbert (Pirola 73); Esposito (Colidio 83), Longo (Perisic 46)
