Pelicans win top pick in 2019 NBA Draft Lottery, Lakers select fourth

The Zion Williamson sweepstakes have ended with the Duke freshman sensation likely to now call New Orleans home, as the Pelicans won the number one overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft Lottery.

The ramifications of the electrifying Williamson landing in the Big Easy are vast, as it could not only convince current Pelicans' star Anthony Davis to stay with the team, but could also force the franchises hoping to trade for Davis to seek another star to pursue.

Williamson is a strong and extremely athletic forward who plays with a high motor.  His thunderous dunks and unselfish play made him by far the most interesting story in college basketball last year.

The Memphis Grizzlies won the second pick, meaning they are likely to select uber-athletic point guard Ja Morant.

Although the media consensus is that this draft is top heavy with the first three picks, Morant and Williamson are in a can't-miss class of their own.  R.J. Barrett, the projected third pick and Williamson's former Duke teammate, sometimes disappeared during key moments last season, but still is an outstanding and skilled prospect.  Barring a trade, Barrett is likely to be selected third by the New York Knicks.

After the top three selections, the talent drop is significant.  Nevertheless, the Lakers made news when they beat the odds and landed the fourth overall pick.  Although General Manager Rob Pelinka could use the pick to add another young player, the franchise is in win-now mode and is likely to try and package the pick in a trade for a proven star.

The NBA Draft will be held on Thursday, June 20, at 7 p.m. ET at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
