Where do the coaches come from?

The greatest thing about college football is that we see the progression. All over America, we see the players go through the progressions. If they are good enough they go from high school to college football to the NFL.

But it's also fun about seeing where the coaches come from. Are they hired from the inside? Are ex-coordinators needing a job? Do they come from the Power-5 or non-Power 5 conferences, are they talking heads/former coaches given another coaching job, or were they jobless for a season or two before being hired again.

SEC
  • 8 former Power-5 co-ordinators (Kirby Smart, Jeremy Pruitt, Will Muschamp, Mark Stoops, Barry Odom
  • 2 Previous head coaches from Power-5 (Jimbo Fisher, Dan Mullen)
  • 2 from non-Power 5 (Gus Malzahn, Chad Morris), Matt Luke, Derek Mason, Joe Moorhead),
  • 1 from NFL (Nick Saban), 21 from inside (Ed Orgeron)
The SEC is really good at promoting from within - especially if they've worked with Nick Saban. The SEC gets most of its head coaches as former coordinators, although it has also hired from Power-5. The hire from the NFL has gone pretty well, too.

ACC
  • 9 from Non-Power 5 (Steve Addazio, Dino Babers, Dave Clawson, Geoff Collins Manny Diaz, Dave Doeren, Justin Fuente, Bronco Meadenhall, Scott Satterfield)
  • 2 Power-5 Coordinator (David Cutcliffe, Pat Narduzzi)
  • 1 head coach from Power-5 (Willie Taggart)
  • 1 from within (Dabo Swinney)
  • 1 from retirement (Mack Brown)
The ACC's record is firing from non-Power 5 conferences. Although Mack Brown's hire brings him out of retirement, other jobs that have gone in the conference this year have come from Non-Power 5 sources (Geoff Collins and Manny Diaz).

BIG XII
  • 5 from non-Power 5 (Neal Brown, Tom Herman, Matt Campbell, Matt Rhule, Matt Wells)
  • 3 from within (Gary Patterson, Lincoln Riley, Mike Gundy)
  • 1 head coach from (enforced) retirement (Les Miles)
  • 1 from FCS (Chris Kleiman)
The Big 12 has 3 coaches promoted from the inside, while five came from Power 5 schools. Chris Klieman, one of the most successful FCS coaches in history was hired this year).

BIG TEN
  • 5 from non-Power 5 (Neal Brown, Jeff Brohm, Mark Dantonio, PJ Fleck, Scott Frost)
  • 3 from within  (Tom Allen, Ryan Day, Pat Fitzgerald)
  • 2 from NFL (Lovie Smith, Kirk Ferentz)
  • 2 from Power-5 (Paul Chryst, James Franklin)
  • 2 former Power-5 Coordinators (Chris Ash, Mike Locksley)
The Big Ten is a real mix of hirings. Like the Big 12, five of them were from non-Power 5 conferences, and it also has the highest NFL coaches hired too (two).

PAC-12
  • 4 former coordinators (Mario Cristobal, Mel Tucker, Justin Wilcox, Jonathan Smith)
  • 3 from inside (Clay Helton, Kyle Whittingham)
  • 2 after a ‘break’ (Chip Kelly, Mike Leach)
  • 1 from retirement (Herm Edwards)
  • 1 from other Power 5 (Kevin Sumlin)
  • 1 from non-Power 5 (Chris Petersen)

This is the biggest mixture of hirings in all college football. 2 came from enforced breaks, one was pulled from ESPN, and the hirings of former coorodinators was the second-highest in CFB behind the SEC. Only one coach came from non-Power 5 conferences – the lowest of the non-Power 5 conferences.

DRILLING DOWN INTO THE NUMBERS
  • 3 from the NFL: (1 SEC, 2 BIG TEN)
  • 2 from retirement: (1 PAC 12, 1 ACC)
  • 3 from 'enforced' breaks: (ie Coming back from a break of more than a football season)
  • 6 from Power-5 conferences: (2 SEC, 1 PAC-12, 1 ACC, 2 BIG TEN)
  • 23 from non-Power 5 conferences: (10 ACC, 5 BIG 12, 2 BIG 10, 2 SEC, 1 PAC-12)
  • 16 former coordinators: (9 SEC, 2 ACC, 2 BIG TEN, 4 PAC-12)
  • 10 from within: (3 BIG 12, 3 BIG TEN, 1 SEC, 2 PAC-12, 1 ACC)
