He is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer who represents the Sri Lanka national cricket team in all three formats of the game. His selection to the international squad came at the tender age of 19, thanks to his impressive fast bowling skills, consistently reaching speeds of over 140 kilometers per hour, and his outstanding performances while playing for the Under-19 team.

Lahiru Kumara Career

Lahiru Kumara made his first-class debut for Sri Lanka A against West Indies A on October 4, 2016. His Twenty20 debut was with Nondescripts Cricket Club during the 2017–18 SLC Twenty20 Tournament on February 24, 2018.

In March 2018, Kumara was part of Kandy’s squad for the 2017–18 Super Four Provincial Tournament, and the following month, he was named in Kandy’s squad for the 2018 Super Provincial One Day Tournament.

In August 2018, Kumara joined Galle’s squad for the 2018 SLC T20 League. In October 2020, he was drafted by the Dambulla Viiking for the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League. Later, in August 2021, he was named in the SLC Greens team for the 2021 SLC Invitational T20 League tournament. In November 2021, he was selected to play for the Kandy Warriors following the players’ draft for the 2021 Lanka Premier League.

Before his debut, Kumara was part of Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he played a crucial role in guiding the Sri Lanka U-19s team to the semi-finals, helping them win the match by six wickets.

Kumara’s journey continued as he was selected for Sri Lanka’s Test squad for their tour of Zimbabwe in October 2016 and made his Test debut against Zimbabwe on October 29, 2016, taking his maiden Test wicket by dismissing Peter Moor.

He was also called up for the One Day International (ODI) team for the Tri-Series in Zimbabwe, featuring West Indies as the third team. In addition, Kumara played in the Test series against South Africa in 2016–17, achieving a notable feat by taking his maiden Test five-wicket haul in the second Test at Newlands Cricket Ground.

In January 2017, Kumara was added to Sri Lanka’s ODI squad for their series against South Africa, making his ODI debut on February 4, 2017. He was subsequently awarded a national contract by Sri Lanka Cricket in May 2018.

In November 2018, Kumara faced disciplinary issues and was removed from Sri Lanka’s Test squad for their series against England. However, his career progressed as he was named in Sri Lanka’s T20I squad for the one-off match against New Zealand in January 2019.

Kumara sustained a hamstring injury later that month during a Test match in Australia, leading to his exclusion from the second Test against Australia and the tour of South Africa.

In September 2021, he was named as one of four reserve players in Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. In October 2021, he was added to Sri Lanka’s main 15-man squad and made his Twenty20 World Cup debut against Namibia on October 18, 2021, taking 2 wickets in the match.
