The Magic Twig is a Controversial New Self-Hooking Device

Ali Hamidi, a well-known carp angler and the proprietor of the OMC (One More Cast) clothing and fishing tackle brand, recently launched The Magic Twig.

Described on the OMC website as ‘The Revolutionary Magic Twig SELF-TRIGGERING HOOKING DEVICE IS HERE! This ingenious PATENT pending device will 100% increase your catch rate as PROVEN Underwater.’

Magic Twig is Banned on Many Fisheries

Many fisheries and fishing clubs have banned The Magic Twig over concerns about fish welfare. Here are some examples:

The Dell Angling Society website:

‘Members are advised that the Magic Twig is banned from use at the Dell.’

‘Anyone found to be using this or any similar device will receive an instant ban.’

Lac Serrerie and Badgers Holt (France) website:

After careful consideration and in view of fish safety we have decided that the ‘Magic Twig’ is banned at both Lac Serrerie and Badgers Holt.

It is banned for the following reasons;

1  They need a 4,5 ounce lead to work efficiently, not really needed on either of our lakes.

2  If you snap off the fish is left towing this contraption which looks like a grappling hook.  It will easily become snagged and tethered on weed or any other debris.

3  If you snap off on the cast it remains loaded and fishing and far more likely to catch than any other type of ‘snapped off’ rig.

4  This will almost certainly tangle in the net causing serious mouth damage to the fish.

Sandhurst Lake website:

PLEASE NOTE: OMC Magic Twig is BANNED until we have carried out our own testing. Thank you

Kelvedon District Angling Association website:

Following concerns raised by some members and after examining the Magic Twig and debating at length the Committee decided that the Magic Twig is banned on KDAA waters. This ban is in line with other local fishing clubs.

The reasons for the ban are based on concerns for fish safety. It was felt that when the Magic Twig is sprung when a fish takes the hookbait, the two rigid prongs have a potential for snagging on weed or other underwater objects. When in the landing net the prongs could catch in the mesh and cause hook damage if the fish thrashes around. In the event of a line break the fish could possibly be tethered to underwaters snags.

The Magic Twig Product Information from the OMC Website

‘For decades fish have been able to shake the Hook free even before you know they’ve picked your hook bait up! Not any MORE. This Loaded Self Triggering Device means as soon as a fish takes your hookbait and turns to straighten your hooklink thus making contact with the weight of your lead or tension in your line, The Magic Twig will Trigger from its LOADED state to recoil and prick the fish quicker, causing an instant bolting reaction, more positive bites, creating an infinitely higher pick-up to hooked fish ratio, better hook holds and many more landed fish.’

Magic Twig Variations

The Magic Twig is currently available in three variations:

LIGHT – Triggered at 4.5oz

This can be used with any lead size. From lighter options right up to 4.5oz or more. Also worth noting is that on some lake beds when you cast your weights will sink into the lake bed causing additional weight. The 4.5oz “Triggered AT” means the amount of pressure needed (and the weight of retractable force back) from a stationary position at the hook end to release the spring mechanism and recoil with the 2nd anchor point being either your lead or lead + tension in your line.

MEDIUM – Triggered at 6.5oz

This can be used with any lead size. From lighter options right up to 6.5oz or more. The 6.5oz “Triggered AT” means the amount of pressure needed (and the weight of retractable force) from a stationary position at the hook end to release the spring mechanism and recoil with the 2nd anchor point being either your lead or lead + tension in your line.

HEAVY – Triggered at 8.5oz

This can be used with any lead size. From lighter options right up to 10-12oz or more. The 8.5oz “Triggered AT” means the amount of pressure needed (and the weight of retractable force) from a stationary position at the hook end to release the mechanism and recoil with the 2nd anchor point being either your lead or lead + tension in your line.

Fish Welfare – OMC

Fish welfare is addressed on the OMC website:

With FISH SAFETY of No.1 importance, this product has been used across the UK & Europe during the last two years of its development to test all elements of the design even in the most extreme snaggy and weedy conditions.

Following extensive UNDERWATER, field research & testing there is no doubt that this is one of the greatest Terminal Tackle breakthroughs in the history of carp & fishing rig mechanics.
