Americans Abroad Player of the Week: Gianluca Busio

Venezia heads into the October International break in touching distance of the top spot in the Serie B table and Gianluca Busio’s Man of the Match performance Saturday certainly played a key part in that.

Busio registered one goal and logged 90 minutes on Saturday in Venezia’s 3-2 home league victory over league-leaders Parma. The former Sporting KC homegrown midfielder was joined by fellow U.S. men’s national team midfielder Tanner Tessmann and proceeded to earn SBI Americans Abroad Player of the Week honors.

Busio’s goal in the 46th minute kicked off a dramatic five-goal thriller between two of Serie B’s promotion chasers. Although the 21-year-old was guilty of conceded one penalty kick, he won all nine of his duels, made two interceptions, and completed 93% of his passes in Venezia’s statement win.

Busio now heads into Usmnt U-23 duty this month for October friendlies against Mexico and Japan. It will be the first of several preparation camps for the USMNT U-23’s ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

He will be pushing for continued minutes at Venezia when the Serie B campaign resumes on Oct. 22 against Reggiana.

Here is a look at some of the other top Americans Abroad performers from this past week:

Christian Pulisic heads into USMNT camp in fine form after notching his fourth Serie A goal in Saturday’s victory over Genoa.

The USMNT attacker came off the bench at halftime on Saturday and proceeded to deliver the breakthrough goal in the 87th minute. Yunus Musah’s cross from the right wing was gathered by Pulisic in the Genoa box before he turned and rifled a low drive into the bottom-right corner.

AC Milan enters the October international break top of the Serie A table with 21 points earned.

Folarin Balogun

It was a memorable return to Stade Reims for USMNT striker Folarin Balogun this past weekend.

Balogun registered his third goal of the season as Monaco claimed a 3-1 road win over Stade Reims. The USMNT forward played 82 minutes in the match, scoring with his only shot on target.

He also received a positive ovation from the Stade Reims faithful following his positive loan spell last season.
