“We’re still trying to figure out who we are and get our thing together,” he said.

Johnson wasn’t happy with what transpired over the next three hours.

“Tonight the Commanders played with no intensity or fire,” he wrote on social media after the loss, which ended the Bears’ 14-game losing streak. “We didn’t compete in the first half and got down 27-3 heading into halftime.”

It was an accurate and condemning assessment of a performance Washington star wide receiver Terry McLaurin said was “as bad as it gets.”

Washington has allowed 40, 34, 37 and 33 points over its last four games, and while the defense isn’t solely responsible for all of that damage, Thursday’s prime-time performance was the most abysmal in a growing list of disgraceful efforts by defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio’s unit this year.

Four days after allowing six plays of 20 yards in an overtime loss to the Eagles, Washington allowed seven such plays against the Bears, including two on the game’s opening drive. The Bears’ 199 total yards in the first quarter were the most allowed by Washington in the first 15 minutes since Oct. 25, 2015, when it fell behind 24-0 before Kirk Cousins orchestrated the largest comeback in franchise history. After Chicago put up 451 total yards and hung 40 points on a defense that was supposed to be the strength of the team, Bears defensive lineman DeMarcus Walker was the only one shouting “You like that!?” on the way to the locker room.

The Eagles cornerback shared some encouraging words for Commanders rookie cornerback and fellow former Mississippi State bulldog Emmanuel Forbes Jr. after Forbes’ second consecutive ugly game prompted Washington to bench him in the fourth quarter. Slay, a second-round pick of the Lions in 2013, told Forbes to keep his head up and that he was also benched as a rookie. “Keep working u go be great!” Slay wrote on social media.

Slay, who whiffed on an attempted tackle of then-Vikings running back Adrian Peterson in his debut, resulting in a 78-yard touchdown, went on to become a five-time Pro Bowler.

Fail: Greg Stroman’s revenge game

Stroman, a seventh-round pick by Washington in 2018, had one interception in 16 games for the Burgundy and Gold before being released the following year. The former Stonewall Jackson High and Virginia Tech cornerback signed with the Bears late last season. In his return to FedEx Field, he intercepted Sam Howell to set up a Bears touchdown in the second quarter and later registered his first career sack. It was that kind of night.

For the second time in three weeks, there were so few highlights for the Commanders that a former Maryland receiver on the opposing team warrants a Hail. Moore finished with eight catches for 230 yards and three touchdowns, which, as JP Finlay of the Beltway Football podcast noted, is the most receiving yards against Washington since Cowboys great and Olympic sprinter Bob Hayes had nine catches for 246 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-30 Dallas win in D.C. on Nov. 13, 1966. Moore came 20 yards shy of breaking Alshon Jeffery’s franchise record for receiving yards in a game, set in December 2013. Good thing former Terp Rakim Jarrett and the Buccaneers aren’t on the schedule.

Fail: Establishing the run

Brian Robinson Jr. had six carries for 10 yards at halftime. With Washington trailing 27-3 at that point, the second-year running back’s only touches in the second half came as a receiver. According to Pro Football Focus, after Robinson’s 1-yard run with 9 minutes remaining in the second quarter, Howell dropped back to pass without a designed run called on 55 consecutive plays through the end of the game. Despite Eric Bieniemy’s understandable pass-heavy approach with the Commanders playing catch-up against a shorthanded Bears secondary, McLaurin was only targeted five times.

The fans have done their part, with Thursday’s game marking the third consecutive (legitimate) sellout at FedEx Field since Josh Harris bought the team. How have the Commanders responded to the support? With an ugly comeback win over Arizona in Week 1, a 37-3 loss to the Bills in Week 3 and their most embarrassing “L” of the Ron Rivera era. Washington has a pair of road games against the Falcons and Giants before returning home to face the Eagles. Expect to see a lot of green in the crowd.
