Washington Sundar is a bowling all-rounder. He is a right-arm off-break bowler and left-handed batsman. He was known as a batsman in U-19 and later turned into an off-spinner to replace Ashwin in the national team of India.

Who is Washington Sundar?

Washington Sundar is a 23-year-old player, soon to be 24, this 5 October, 2023. He has an illustrious first-class career and age-based national team career as well. He was born in 1999 in Chennai. 

His father was a cricketer as well. He made it to the Tamil Nadu team of the Ranji Trophy. Although he could not make it to the final squad, he was a lifelong fan of cricket. His sister, Shailaja Sundar, is also a cricket player. The man himself started playing cricket at the age of four. 

First Class career

Washington Sundar made his first-class debut in the Ranji Trophy with Tamil Nadu. The season was 2016-17. He changed his primary responsibility from a batsman to a bowler like R. Ashwin. He had his first century soon, though. In the very next season, he scored a century against Tripura.  

He has played 23 matches for Tamil Nadu. He has scored 1052 runs with 1 century and 6 half-centuries. He has taken 51 wickets with 3, 5WI and 1, 10WM. He would be debuted soon in his international matches. 

T20 International &  IPL career

Washington Sundar played his first T20 match against Sri Lanka in December 2017. He has played 37 matches till now. He has taken 29 wickets with an average of 29 runs. He has a half-century, which is impressive for his position. 

Against New Zealand, He became the fourth player to score a half-century and take at least 2 wickets in a match. India lost that match by 26 runs, but it was a heroic innings from Washington Sundar.

He has played 58 matches in total in IPL. He has taken 38 wickets and scored 354 runs in total. His first team in IPl was Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017. Ironically, he played as a replacement for Ashwin. He was also the man of the match in the Qualifier 1 against Mumbai Indians. 

For the next season, he was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore. He had a pretty good career there. Then he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for 8.75 crores. 

ODI International 

Washington Sundar has played 18 ODI internationals till now. He has taken 16 wickets as a right-arm off-break bowler. The man has an average of 30 with an economy rate of 5.00 runs. The stats for his bowling are not very impressive but this is only the beginning for him. He has the potential to do much better in the Future. 

He has batted for 10 innings out of the 18 matches that he played. He has 251 runs in total with one half-century. The stats might not be impressive to the eyes but it is better to remember that India has Top-class batsmen in their top-order. The middle or lower order is not heavily involved in most matches. 

Considering that fact, 1 half-century in 10 innings with an S/R of 83.01 is not that bad. The half-century in ODIs also came against New Zealand. This innings led India to put respectable runs on the scoreboard as a target. 

International Test career 

He has played 4 test matches and has taken 6 wickets in 7 innings. He has a bowling average of 49 runs and an economy rate of 3.41 runs. But his batting in tests is where he has shown his class. 

Washington Sundar has 3 half-centuries in his 4 test matches. His highest is 96 runs and his batting average is 66.25. This is more than impressive for someone who has only played 4 matches. Since he was very good at first-class cricket, tests are his comfort zone, it seems. 

He was 96* against England at the Ahmedabad,2021 test. India won the test match by an innings and 26 runs. He was 85* against the same team at the Chennai test in 2021. He made 62 runs against Australia in 2021. We can see that 2021 was indeed a very good year for his test career. 

Washington Sundar Lifestyle

Washington is a handsome young man of good height and stature. He is 6’2” and 70 kg. He is a non-vegetarian who loves to cook his food. 

He is a very private person and likes to keep boundaries about his personal life. There is no known sighting or announcement of his relationship or marriage. It is safe to say that he is single. ( good news for the ladies). 

Since the man has played IPL seasons, his net worth can be around $4-6 million. This puts him within the top 1% of India. 

Washington Sundar has the potential to become one of the best all-format cricketers in India. He is a very intelligent player with a high game IQ.
