Background and Early Days 

Prithvi Pankaj Shaw was born in Maharashtra on 9th November 1999. He comes from a Bihari root. The interesting thing is, Prithvi was admitted to a cricket academy only at 3 years of age. 

He lost his mother at the age of 4. Prithvi converted his concentration to cricket. Shaw’s father toiled hard to support him in cricket. Fortunately, Prithvi got scholarships which supported his family financial crisis.

Early Cricketing Career (Domestic)

Prithvi Shaw started playing cricket at the age of 3. He played and led several teams in his early domestic career. At an early age, he captained MIG Cricket Club, Rizvi Springfield High School, Mumbai under-16 team.

In November of 2013, Prithvi Shaw imprinted his name into cricket history as he scored a remarkable 546 runs in an innings during a Harris Shield elite division match. It is the highest individual score in any organized form of cricket. He led Rizvi Springfield from the front to win in the prestigious Harris Shield competition in 2012 and 2013. 

Shaw also showed his potential in England to represent Cheadle Hulme School in Manchester. During his two-month journey, he scored 1,446 runs, with an average of 84. Prithvi continued his form and adaptability to different conditions. He made an impressive knock against the Julian Wood Cricket Academy in England in 2013. Julian Wood, founder of the academy was so impressed by him. He offered Shaw to spend time at the academy. 

Shaw made his List A debut in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai on 25 February 2017. In the same year, Shaw reached another milestone scoring second consecutive century in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy.  With his continuous form in domestic cricket, he was called for India A’s squad for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy.

Notably, Prithvi Shaw has another record for the highest List A score by a captain in men’s cricket. He scored 827 runs in the same tournament which holds the most runs by an individual in a single season.

Prithvi Shaw in the U-19 World Cup 

Prithvi Shaw played for the age-level Indian national team. His maiden century came at the under-19 cricket came on 6 February 2017. Later he got captaincy of India U-19 team for the Under-19 CWC 2018. He led his team to achieve the U-19 World Cup title for the fourth time. 

Prithvi Shaw in International Cricket

Test Cricket

Shaw got his maiden call to the Indian Test squad in the month of August 2018. However, he made his debut later on 4th October 2018 against the Caribbean side. He is the 2nd youngest Indian cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar to score a hundred on debut in that match. And Prithvi won the Man of the Series award.

Later in 2020, Prithvi played against New Zealand where he scored a half-century in 4 innings. Due to poor performance and technique being questioned, he had been dropped in a series against Australia.

ODI Cricket

Prithvi Shaw received his ODI Cap against New Zealand in February 2020. He showed his class in limited-over cricket with a flourish of 43 in 24 balls against Sri Lanka in the first match. 

T20 International 

Prithvi started his T-20 International journey for India on 25 July 2021, against Sri Lanka.

Prithvi Shaw in IPL 

Prithvi made his IPL debut in 2018 for Delhi Daredevils. He was bought for INR 1.2 crores in the auction. In the IPL 2022 auction, he stayed in Delhi for 7.5 crores.

  • He made the highest score (546 runs from 330) by any batter in any organized cricket match in a Harris Shield match.
  • He is the maiden Indian player to hit a hundred on his debut in the  Duleep Trophy, Ranji Trophy, and Test Cricket.
  • Second youngest Indian cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar to score a hundred on debut in 2018.
  • The 15th cricketer for India to make a hundred on his debut in Test Cricket.
  • The sixth cricketer for India to get the Man of the Match award on debut.
  • ICC listed Prithvi Shaw as one of the top five breakout stars in 2018.

Prithvi Shaw Controversies (Doping Violation)

Prithvi Shaw was banned for a doping violation for 8 months in July 2019. 

Unfortunately, Prithvi Shaw found himself in a doping controversy. In a urine test during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, it was found that Prithvi took a banned substance called Terbutaline. This component is often found in cough syrups. 

Terbutaline is on the list of prohibited substances as per the WADA Prohibited List of Substances. In these circumstances, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) assessed all the evidence and imposed Shaw eight months of ban. 

Prithvi Shaw Rumors

Prithvi Shaw has been rumored several times with several names in the recent past. Earlier there was a rumor, that the television actress Prachi Singh is his girlfriend. She shared an Instagram post appreciating Shaw’s brilliant knock against Sri Lanka. 

Recently, Prithvi Shaw made his first public get-together with Indian model and actress Nidhhi Tapadiaa at the 2023 IIFA. 

Prithvi Shaw’s Lifestyle & Current Status

The Indian young cricketer’s lifestyle was questioned after he was caught in a dope test. Several reports showed that this year he couldn’t pass the fitness test (yo-yo test).  

He was asked by an interviewer from Cricbuzz and Wisden about his controversies. Prithvi replied saying as Taylor Swift sang in the ‘Shake it Off’ song. “And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate…”

He said: “Even if I say, will they stop? They will keep saying. If I am doing well on the field, they will write good things about me. If I am not doing well (with my cricket), they will write: ‘Oh he went there, enjoyed somewhere, this and then’. It’s going to keep happening. It happens to the best of the players. When you are not performing, something negative does come out, even if it’s not reflective of the person. Even if I don’t step out, things will be said. We can’t stop them.”
