Hawks Extend Okongwu’s Contract, Will Pay $62 Mil.

Onyeka Okongwu will be proudly wearing an Atlanta Hawks jersey for a while longer.

That’s because he just signed an extension to his contract that adds an additional four years to his career with the Hawks and makes him $62 million richer.

The Hawks did not confirm the terms of the agreement per team policy, but ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski posted on X (nee Twitter) this afternoon that the contract is indeed a four-year, $62 million extension. Wojnarowski cites excellbasketball’s Sam Goldfelder for his information.

The deal was signed just before the deadline at 6 PM this evening. He was one of several NBA players to agree to extensions.

The numbers Okongwu put up this past season points to why the Hawks wanted to keep him around. He scored a career-best 9.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 1.0 assists in 23.1 minutes. The Hawks say this production marked the second-highest clip in a single season in team franchise history.

In his career, Okongwu played in 178 games (28 starts), tallying 7.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks in 19.3 minutes. He has blocked 200 shots in his full career.
