Bird Talk: Falcons Announce New Practice Squad, Adds to 53 Man Roster

Introducing Falcons New Practice Squad

On the day following the Atlanta Falcons announcement of the initial 53-man roster, the team today announced a list of 14 new members of the Falcons Practice Squad.

These players had been retained by the Falcons from yesterday’s waived player list, which extends their tenure with the team. The NFL has a limit of 16 players that can be placed on the squad, so more could be added to this list.

The additions to the practice squad include:

Micah Abernathy (DB)

Natrone Brooks (DB)

Justin Shaffer (OL)

Timmy Horne (DL)

Godwin Igwebuike (WR)

LaCale London (DL)

Matthew Sexton (WR)

Tyler Vrabel (OL)

Barry Westley (OL)

Andre Smith (LB)

Parker Hesse (TE)

Tucker Fisk (TE)

Xaiver Malone (WR)

Zay Malone (WR)

Head Coach Arthur Smith said today in a press confrence that the two remaining slots will be filed.

Falcons Add To 53 Man Roster

The team announced they have signed offensive lineman Isaiah Prince to their 53 man roster. Prince comes to Atlanta from Denver, where he was cut after the Bronco’s preseason last Sunday. Prince had been in the NFL since 2019. His career was briefly interupted by the Covid 19 pandemic, then he resumed his career by signing with the Cincinnatti Bengals for a year’s service.

In other 53 man roster news, Offensive lineman Josh Miles was waived

“Benzie” Lands a Security Job at the Benz

Mercedes Benz Stadium has something new to help with security after hours. “Benzie” may not be a real canine, but the stadium hopes the robotic watchdog will keep the area secure during the hours when the stadium is closed to the public. The German Shepard-sized robot was created by Asylon Robotics, a Philadelphia-based company focused on robotic security. It has four legs, which can move rapidly, and has a built-in security camera. No word on whether it can run a pass to the end zone.

They Look A Little Young to Be Falcons, Right?

Looks like the some of the team members have gotten smaller since we last saw them last week.

Kicking For A Purpose

Falcons punter Bradley Pinion will be making his kicks to do more than just help put his team on top. The team announced today that for every punt Pinion makes within the 20 yard line, $1,000 will be given to charity. The drive, called “Punts for Purpose” which Pinion started with his wife Kaeleigh, will benifit child survival centers in the developing world in partnership with Compassion International.

“We’ve been blessed beyond belief,” said Pinion to AtlantaFalcons.com. “We’re just trying to give back any way possible.”

Wha’d He Say…?

Head Coach Smith met with reporters at a presser at Flowery Branch today.

  • 11 Alive’s Maria Martin reported that Smith said in response to a question about DeMarcco Hellams, “He’s hard to keep off the field and hopefully he keeps trending in that direction.”
  • Smith, during the presser today, said that many of the players would be spending their weekend off (the last for awhile) watching college football games at their college alma maters.
  • WSB TV’s Alison Mastrangelo reported Smith saying the best reactions he got was telling former XFL players they made the 53 man roster or practice squad.
  • Fox 5’s Kelly Price asked Coach Smith what stands out most about the newly created roster compared to past years. Smith said the depth on both lines of scrimmage, how past draft picks have grown over the years. “It’s exciting. It’s a fun group to work with, a mature group,” he said.
