Ange Postecoglou breaks English Premier League record for most points by a new manager in first 9 games

Tottenham’s Ange Postecoglou becomes first English Premier League manager to win 23+ points in first 9 games:

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has broken the English Premier League record for most points accumulated by a new manager in his first nine games.

The Australian tactician, who joined Spurs from Scottish Premiership side Celtic in the summer of 2023, has guided his team to seven wins and two draws in their first nine league games of the season, amassing a total of 23 points.

This surpasses the previous record of 22 points, which had been held jointly by Mike Walker (Norwich City, 1992/93) and Guus Hiddink (Chelsea, 2009).

Postecoglou’s achievement is even more remarkable given that he became the first Australian and Greek manager to take charge of a Premier League club at the start of the 2023/24 season.

The 56-year-old has also been named Premier League Manager of the Month for both August and September 2023.

Tottenham’s flying start to the season has seen them rise to the top of the Premier League table, where they sit two points clear of defending champions Manchester City.

Postecoglou has attributed Tottenham’s success to the collective effort of everyone involved at the club.

“It’s (a) credit to everyone,” he said. “It’s a really encouraging start to the season for sure. Performance-wise, we’ve been really consistent.”

Postecoglou has also praised his players’ work ethic and discipline.

“I thought our pressing was outstanding all game,” he said. “But with the ball, it was probably the worst 45 minutes we’ve had all year.”

“We’ve got to make sure we stay disciplined in our approach. In the end, Vic [Guglielmo Vicario] made a couple of great saves to keep a clean sheet. In that context, we should have had much better control in the game.”

Postecoglou’s tactical philosophy

Postecoglou is known for his attacking style of play, which is based on possession and high pressing. He has implemented his philosophy at Tottenham, and the team has been one of the most entertaining to watch in the Premier League this season.

One of the key features of Postecoglou’s system is the use of inverted full-backs. This means that the full-backs tuck inside into midfield when Tottenham are in possession, which creates overloads in central areas. This makes it difficult for the opposition to defend and gives Tottenham more space to create chances.

Another key feature of Postecoglou’s system is the use of a false nine. This is a striker who drops deep to receive the ball and link up with the midfielders. This creates space for the wingers to run into and allows Tottenham to build attacks from deep.

Postecoglou’s impact on Tottenham

Postecoglou has had a transformative impact on Tottenham in his short time at the club. He has instilled a winning mentality in the team and has them playing some of the most attractive football in the Premier League.

Under Postecoglou, Tottenham have become a more aggressive and attacking team. They are pressing higher up the pitch and creating more chances. This has led to a significant improvement in their results.

Postecoglou has also gotten the best out of Tottenham’s individual players. Son Heung-min is having the best season of his career, and Harry Kane is back to his best form.

If Postecoglou can maintain Tottenham’s current form, they will be challenging for the Premier League title this season.
