Green Bay Packers: Matt Lafleur Talks New Role For Returning Player

The Green Bay Packers have had a lot of moving pieces in the 2024 offseason, from signing star power like Xavier McKinney and Josh Jacobs to the re-signing of pivotal pieces like Keisean Nixon. The Green Bay Packers have established that they are in pursuit of a Super Bowl after a promising season from the young team. With departures like DeVondre Campbell and Aaron Jones, it is clear the Green Bay Packers will take a different approach in multiple different position groups.

After this carousel of personnel the Green Bay Packers underwent, it was unsure where pending free agent running back AJ Dillon would fit into the offense if he was to be re-signed. AJ Dillon was recently signed to a minimum contract to return to the Green Bay Packers, now with his exact role uncertain for the future Matt Lafleur took to the news to answer the question.

AJ Dillon is a very unique talent in the NFL, his size and hand skills make him a difficult player to classify. Matt Lafleur talked about how his versatility may come into play for the Green Bay Packers in the 2024-25 season

“AJ is another guy that I think can be a high-volume guy,” LaFleur said to media during the March owners meetings. “Unfortunately, this year, he battled through a lot of (injury) stuff throughout the course of the season, but I thought just from the things he was able to bring from a pass-protection standpoint this year, this was his best year at pass pro.

“So we know what we’re getting with AJ Dillon. I think there’s some versatility we can start to use with him moving forward, and start to use him more as a movable piece, not just a tailback.”

The new role Green Bay Packers head coach Matt Lafleur describes draws a resemblance to the role carved out for Josiah Deguara over the past multiple years. Deguara established himself as a glue piece for the Green Bay Packers west coast offense during his tenure with the team. AJ Dillon has a considerably higher ability with the ball in his hands, given this AJ Dillon in this role could be a unique fold in an already productive Green Bay Packers offense.
