The biggest question so far in the Milwaukee Brewers‘ offseason is, “Is Craig Counsell staying in Milwaukee?” And while we don’t have official answers to that yet, there’s a ton of speculation as to where Counsell could end up should he decide to part ways with the crew.
His current contract with the Brewers is set to expire on Oct. 31, where we’ll hopefully have some more information about where he’s going, if he’s staying, things like that. However, Andy Martino of SNY reported that Counsell isn’t opposed to coming to New York, per two MLB sources.
Will Craig Counsell be back with the Milwaukee Brewers next year?
It’s been a giant question mark on whether or not Craig Counsell is going to be the Milwaukee Brewers’ manager next season. After the Brewers had a quick trip to the postseason that ended in a two-game loss against the Arizona Diamondbacks, all the speculation has started to run around about the future of Counsell’s managerial future.
Counsell is the second-longest tenured manager across all teams in Major League Baseball. The Whitefish Bay native played six years for the crew, and served as a special assistant to former GM Doug Melvin until Ron Roenicke received the boot as manager in 2015. Since then, Couns has won over 700 games and became the winningest manager in Brewers history.
What are some options?
There’s no doubt that the Brewers would love to keep Counsell as their manager, GM Matt Arnold said so himself in his end-of-year press conference just a few weeks ago. Arnold stated that he remains in contact with Counsell, keeping open communications about the future of his managerial tenure.
However there is that possibility that he could decide to go to another team. Many have thrown around the New York Mets as former Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns signed a deal as the Mets’ new president of baseball operations.
According to two league sources that are familiar with the situation said on Monday that Counsell would “embrace” New York. Stearns and Counsell have some success together, anyways – Milwaukee punched their way to the postseason four consecutive years from 2018-2021, including two NL Central pennants.
Counsell was asked on the last day of the regular season about the Mets job opening up and all the speculation that’s been following it. At the time, Counsell was feeling fired about about the team and their potential postseason run. But, that run lasted very short and now it’s time to start looking towards the next season and what changes could/should be made.
Of course Brewers fans, players, coaches, etc would love Craig Counsell back as the manager. The team has found success under him and have been a successful franchise in the last five years. The situation shouldn’t drag on for too long, seeing as they need to start looking at what’s best for the team moving forward. I don’t know about you, but I can’t imagine Counsell managing any other team but the crew.
