Much of the talk regarding the Brewers’ prospects and their farm system has been about Jackson Chourio. I am almost as excited about another Prospect, though: Jeferson Quero.
While Quero, a catcher, isn’t the top prospect in baseball, he is shooting up the prospect lists. Quero has shown it with the lumber and has shown standout abilities behind the plate as well. He has shot up to the No. 32 prospect in baseball.
It’s hard to blame people for being hyped for the top prospect in baseball. But Quero is no slouch and could be a difference-making two-way player upon arrival in Milwaukee.

Brewers prospect Quero is stellar on defense and has thunder in the bat
The Brewers signed Quero as a 16-year-old out of Venezuela for $200,000 in 2019. His smooth swing is what was evident right away. The backstop has raked at a high level and flashed tremendous defensive skills with a rocket arm.
In his MLB Pipeline profile, it states:
Quero’s defensive work has popped since he first signed. He moves well behind the plate, earning strong reviews for his blocking and receiving, and Milwaukee officials have long been impressed with how well he works with pitchers at such a young age. He’s always shown plus arm strength too, and that truly popped last year in the Fall League, when he caught 11 of 24 (45.8 percent) attempted base stealers. His 30.6 percent CS rate during the regular season may be a more realistic expectation over a larger sample, but still shows just how good he can be at limiting the opponents’ run game.

Last year, Quero slashed .286/.342/.439 with 10 homers in 95 games between Single-A and High-A and moved onto the Arizona Fall League, where he held his own as one of the showcase circuit’s youngest players, his MLB Pipeline bio says.

Quero can reach base at a decent clip and hit for decent pop, and if he combines that with his defensive skills, there’s enough upside to be a good starting catcher in the big leagues

The catcher/designated hitter has continued raking in his age 20 season, with a solid slash line of .262/.339/.441. Quero smacked 16 homers, drove in 49 runs, and scored 47 runs at AA-Biloxi this season. The rising prospect had a monster in July but finished pretty cold at the plate in August and September. Overall, though, it’s another solid year put together by Quero.

A special Brewers backstop pairing
I like Victor Caratini, but a Quero and William Contreras pairing in Milwaukee would be outstanding. Both Quero and Contreras can play multiple times per week as designated hitters as well to keep their bats in the lineup while also getting them some rest, not having to don the catcher’s gear.
