The Milwaukee Brewers unfortunately are in the offseason phase of the year as their 2023 postseason lasted just two games. Already 2024 arbitration projections have been released and speculations have begun as to who will be tendered a contract or not. Another thing to take into consideration is which players are set to become free agents and who have pending options.
Six Milwaukee Brewers players are set to become free agents and four have pending options for the 2024 season.
Players do not officially become free agents in Major League Baseball until the day after the World Series concludes and teams cannot sign players until five days afterwards. Based on the Brewers end of the year 40-man roster six players are set to become free agents once this time arrives. They are Jesse Winker, Carlos Santana, Victor Caratini, Josh Donaldson, Darin Ruf, and Colin Rea.
Of this group Colin Rea is the only one with special circumstances allowing him to become a free agent. He was signed last off-season after spending a year overseas and has special wording in his contract that allows him to elect free agency despite having just three years of MLB service time.
Players with team options include Mark Canha, Justin Wilson, and Andrew Chafin. The lone player with a mutual option is Wade Miley. Values of these options are as follows: Mark Canha – $12.17 MM, Justin Wilson – $2.50 MM, Andrew Chafin – $7.25 MM, and Wade Miley $10.00 MM.
In the minor leagues Julio Teheran, who was designated for assignment at the end of the regular season, has elected free agency. Additionally former top prospect Keston Hiura has also decided to test the open market. Several other minor league players were released as well, but Julio Teheran and Keston Hiura were the two most notable names.
