Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell played the 2023 season without the security of a contract for 2024. GM Matt Arnold has been open regarding his desire to retain the Wisconsin native as his manager and has indicated that if Craig Counsell desires to return to the Brewers that a deal will get done. That being said one crucial piece of information regarding his contract was recently revealed.

According to a post from MLB Trade Rumors they indicated that Mark W Sanchez of the New York Post made it known that Craig Counsell will remain under contract with the Brewers until October 31. This is important because while he is still employed by Milwaukee teams will need to ask them permission in order to interview him.
Teams currently in search of a new manager include the Cleveland Guardians, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels, and the New York Mets. All would love to acquire a great manager like Craig Counsell but waiting to interview him may cost them opportunities at some other top candidates who could sign before October ends.
The New York Mets have been the team most frequently linked to Craig Counsell. His former boss David Stearns recently took over as their president of baseball operations and in theory a reunion between the two makes sense. It will be interesting to see if the Mets hold off on a managerial hiring until Craig Counsell is eligible to interview or if David Stearns will pull some strings and get permission ahead of time.
Another consideration to remember is that Craig Counsell’s desire to manage in 2024 reportedly hinges on his own personal decision. His kids are very active in sports right now and being the manager of a baseball team means that he misses a large chunk of their games.
It will be interesting to see what Craig Counsell elects to do in 2024. While his contract does expire with the Brewers on October 31 a decision to manage or not can be made at any time.
