Milwaukee Brewers: William Contreras Left Out of MLB Ranking

October is the time for postseason baseball and historic moments that people will talk about for a lifetime. This is the month where you’ll see baseball’s best go head-to-head for that sweet, sweet World Series trophy and rings at the end of the season. This is also the month that the Milwaukee Brewers will (hopefully) make it all the way to get their chance at a beautiful WS ring.

MLB.com released a “Top players in 2023 MLB playoffs” article yesterday, which according to them was based on “a mix of 2023 form, track record, and health.” Some names on this list were a given, but they left out one person who is one of the hottest hitters in baseball: William Contreras.

Now, this doesn’t make or break a player or determine how he should be viewed, but if we’re going to talk about athletes who have been hugely impacting the game, it’s safe to say that Contreras belongs on that list.

There are names such as Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, the favorite for the NL MVP Ronald Acuna, and Jose Altuve which are almost a given, but then you have some names that you normally don’t see like Gunnar Henderson, Pablo Lopez, Ketel Marte, etc who somehow made it over Contreras.

The Milwaukee Brewers even had a handful of players make the list, but how and why did they forget Contreras? Scrolling down the list, you have Devin Williams at 16, followed by Corbin Burnes at 22, and Christian Yelich at 37. Yup, that’s it. The no. 3 seeded team in the National League had just three players on that list.

Contreras didn’t even make the honorable mentions, but both Freddy Peralta and Brandon Woodruff made the list.

William Contreras had the perfect reaction on Twitter to this list being posted.

I think emojis say enough about the disrespect the MLB writers put on his name by not including him in this list.

Where Contreras ranks among the other players

When taking a look at Contreras’ season stats, there are some areas where he’s ranking higher than those that are on the list. Contreras’ OPS of .828 is higher than fellow catcher Adley Rutschman (14th), better OPS and OPS+ than Marcus Semien (17th), Randy Arozarnea (24th), and Gunnar Henderson (12th).

Contreras ended the season on a 18-game hitting streak, and yet he still isn’t on the list? Alright. If I were him, I would use this as karma towards MLB for when the Brewers absolutely crush it this month in the postseason and they didn’t put him on the list in the first place.
