Milwaukee Brewers: 2 Pitchers Will Miss Starts Against The Chicago Cubs

The Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs will meet over the weekend for the final regular season series of the year.  Milwaukee already has the third seed in the playoffs secured whereas Chicago is fighting for the final Wild Card spot.  Due to these circumstances two Brewers pitchers will miss starts in order to prepare for the post season.

Two Milwaukee Brewers pitchers will miss starts this weekend against the Chicago Cubs.

Upon conclusion of the St. Louis Cardinals series the Brewers announced that Colin Rea will start Friday night against the Cubs and Adrian Houser on Sunday.  Saturday’s starting pitcher is still to be determined, but both Brandon Woodruff and Freddy Peralta will not appear in games.

Manager Craig Counsell did clarify that both Brandon Woodruff and Freddy Peralta are being skipped in the rotation in order to get them some additional rest prior to the playoffs and that all is good health wise.  The current plan is for Brandon Woodruff to throw some BP on Friday and for Freddy Peralta to strictly rest.

Overall this plan makes sense.  Corbin Burnes had a four inning, 66 pitch tune up outing against the Cardinals on Thursday and now is in line to start Tuesday’s Wild Card Series opening game.  Brandon Woodruff and Freddy Peralta could then follow him.

Coincidentally the Brewers could end up facing the Cubs during the best of three Wild Card Series.  Chicago currently has the same record as the Miami Marlins, but they would not be in the playoffs if the season ended today because they do not own the tie breaker.  This means that the Cubs will have to finish with a better record than the Marlins in order to make it to the post season.

All of this should make for an interesting final series of the year.  Milwaukee can’t improve upon their playoff position but they could prevent Chicago from making the playoffs.
