Milwaukee Brewers: Garrett Mitchell Gets On-Base All 3 Times In First Game Back From Shoulder Surgery

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell defined the odds by returning to the big league roster after undergoing shoulder surgery in early May.  In September he spent a week and a half on injury rehab assignment in Triple-A and was officially activated prior to the series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals.  During his first game back he ended up reaching base safely in all three at-bats.

Garrett Mitchell reached base safely in all three at-bats during his first game back when the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals.

During his first at-bat Garret Mitchell wasted no time swinging the bat as he hit a double on the first big league pitch that he saw since April.  He then drew two walks during his next two at-bats in which during the fifth inning he saw five pitches and in the seventh inning he battled back after being down 0-2 and drew a free pass on the ninth pitch of the at-bat.

Following the 3-0 victory over the Cardinals Garrett Mitchell was more than excited about how things played out but acknowledged that he is still getting back into the swing of things.

“Everything is working out the way it was supposed to.  I was telling myself, ‘Just get back here, be yourself, do what you can to help the team.’ I’m glad that we’re here.”

“I’ve got the gameday juices flowing again, and I haven’t had that in a while.  I’m trying to get my feet down on the ground and go through my process.”

According to Milwaukee Brewers GM Matt Arnold one big reason why they elected to activate him was to gather more information prior to having to decide on a post season roster.  At this point Garrett Mitchell is not a lock and currently is one of several outfielders on the roster.  Matt Arnold had the following to say regarding the situation.

“We all know he wants to be out there and he’s done an amazing job getting back.  So if it’s not there, it’s not any issue with him or his work or anything like that. It’s a good problem to have because we have a lot of good players and we’re going to have to make tough decisions on the roster.”

There are just three games remaining in the 2023 regular season as the Brewers will take on the Chicago Cubs over the weekend.  Milwaukee cannot improve upon their playoff standings but Garrett Mitchell will be presenting his case for a spot on the post season roster.
