Green Bay Packers: Important Notes From The Week 3 Win Over The Saints

The Green Bay Packers achieved a remarkable victory this past Sunday with a come-from-behind win against the New Orleans Saints. In the fourth quarter, they scored 18 unanswered points and emerged victorious, tying for first place in the NFC North with a 2-1 record.

This win demonstrated the Packers’ resilience and determination, as they refused to give up despite being behind for most of the game. It will undoubtedly boost their confidence going forward. Here are some key important notes from the Packers’ week three triumph over the Saints.

Note#1- This Is Probably The Best Pass Rush The Packers Have Had In a Long Time

During the game, the Packers had a clear advantage against the New Orleans Saints offensive line, and they were able to take full advantage of it. Throughout the game, the Packers’ pass rush was consistently getting after the Saints. The Packers were able to secure four sacks on the day, with Rashan Gary being responsible for three of them. Here are two of Gary’s sacks.

One of the three sacks that Gary made during the game led to Derek Carr’s shoulder injury, and my thoughts are with him for a speedy recovery. However, it cannot be denied that the Packers’ pass rush is one of the strongest they have had in a long time and is deep both on the edge and the interior.

The Packers have consistently been getting after opposing quarterbacks this season, as they are first in the NFL in pressures. Plus, it is set to be even better with Rashan Gary nearly recovered from his ACL injury last season. The Packer’s pass rush has been very good and has contributed to the success of the defense this season.

Note#2- Dontayvion Wicks Is Stepping Up And Looking Like A Steal For The Packers

The Green Bay Packers have found a hidden gem in their rookie wide receiver, Dontayvion Wicks, this season. Due to an injury sustained by Christian Watson, Wicks has been receiving significant snaps on offense. He has been consistently improving each week and displaying potential to become an excellent player. Although his stats are not remarkable, he has shown flashes of brilliance. Here are some of his highlights from Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Wick’s route running is impressive, and he has demonstrated a great understanding of how to get open. He even managed to beat Pro Bowl corner Marshon Lattimore, which is no easy feat for any wide receiver. As he gets more in-game snaps and with the hopeful return of Christian Watson soon, Dontayvion Wicks will only continue to improve in his rookie season.

Note#3- Rasheed Walker’s Good Play Just Shows The Packers Just Know How Find And Develop Offensive Linemen

On Sunday, the Green Bay Packers did a great job in protecting Jordan Love, allowing only one sack against the New Orleans Saints. Although the offensive line failed to pick up a blitz on that one sack, they had a good day overall in terms of pass blocking. Rasheed Walker, a second-year player, impressed by filling in for David Bakhtiari, who is currently dealing with knee issues. Walker had an outstanding game and built on his strong performance against the Atlanta Falcons in the previous week. According to Brad Spielberger from Pro Football Focus, Walker’s performance on Sunday was exceptional.

– Back-to-back pass block grades of 75.0+ – 0 pressures allowed on True Pass Sets (only tackle with 25+ TPS snaps and 0 pressures allowed)

It seems that Rasheed Walker has made significant progress in his second year and has become a promising player for the Packers’ offensive line. The Packers have a great track record when it comes to scouting, drafting, and developing offensive linemen, and they have a knack for discovering hidden talent. It is possible that Rasheed Walker could become the next great Packers offensive lineman and even prompt the Packers to consider moving on from David Bakhtiari in the offseason.

Note#4- AJ Dillion Is A Great Teammate, But He Is Not The Lead Running Back For The Packers

Since his breakout game against the Tennessee Titans in 2020 as a rookie, AJ Dillion has not been able to build off that impressive performance. He had a decent year in 2021 but took a major step back in 2022. This season, he has not performed well and has failed to step up in the absence of Aaron Jones. His performance on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints was particularly disappointing.

Interestingly, the Packers offense seemed to perform much better when Emmanuel Wilson and Patrick Taylor were more involved. Considering this, it may be in the Packers’ best interest to reduce Dillon’s snaps as he is not capable of being the team’s leading back. Dillon has struggled to gain the tough yards and has missed some open holes in the run game, as was evident from his performance on Sunday. Here is a clip of AJ Dillion missing a huge hole for him against the Saints.

It is no secret that Dillion has gained popularity and is loved among Packers fans, but his recent performances have not been up to the team’s expectations. As a result, other players need to be given the opportunity to shine until Aaron Jones returns. It is crucial to have a proper rotation to spark the running game on offense. Although AJ Dillion is beloved by many, his poor performances may jeopardize his future as a Packer.

Note#5: The Defense Was Locked In And Played Very Well

The defensive coordinator, Joe Barry, had his team well-prepared against the strong New Orleans Saints offense. The Packers’ defense put up a great performance, only allowing the Saints to score ten points in the entire game. The players on the Packers’ defense executed their assignments with precision, whether they were playing zone or press-man coverage.

They also held up well against the run, allowing the Saints to gain only 3.4 yards per carry. Joe Barry deserves credit for this victory, especially for shutting down the Saints’ offense in the second half. However, the defense needs to be consistent in their performances, given that they have the talent to be a top ten defense in the league. The upcoming game against the Detroit Lions will be another test for Joe Barry and the Packers’ defense.

Note#6 – Jordan Love Is The Guy Going Forward

There were doubters of Jordan Love when he was drafted in 2020. However, he has been proving them wrong this season with impressive performances. Love, in his first year as starting quarterback for the Packers, has been very impressive, scoring nine total touchdowns – eight through passing and one through rushing.

He has effectively executed Matt LaFleur’s offense and demonstrated excellent leadership skills. His teammates have praised him a lot this season. De’Vondre Campbell also spoke highly of Love after the game on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Here is what he had to say about Jordan Love.

“When I told everyone last year that J.Love was better than a lot of QBs in this league, everyone laughed at me and called me crazy I wonder what they think now.”

In addition, he put the team on his back on Sunday and led the Packers to a comeback win against the New Orleans Saints. Jordan Love is certainly the Packers franchise quarterback going forward, and it seems the Packers might have made the right decision at that position for the third time in a row.
