Milwaukee Brewers 9, New York Yankees 2: Tyrone Taylor Comes Up Huge for Brewers Second Straight Victory

After Christian Yelich was scratched from the lineup with a sore back, the Milwaukee Brewers put Tyrone Taylor in, playing left field and batting ninth in the order.

Taylor came in clutch, smashing a leadoff home run that would start a three-run eighth inning, helping the crew come out with their second straight victory against the New York Yankees, 9-2 on Saturday afternoon.

A two and a half hour rain delay caused actual game time to start at around 3:40 PM CST. Unlike Friday’s game that only had a 15 minute delay, it stormed on Yankee Stadium, flooding up parts of the concourse, the outfield looked like a swimming pool, and fans were trying to stay dry.

The Milwaukee Brewers have now won 11 consecutive interleague games.

The Brewers defeated the Cleveland Guardians back in June to start off a sweep of the Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins, and Texas Rangers. If they win Sunday’s contest, they’ll have 12 straight wins against American League teams.

Milwaukee gains a full game in the NL Central Division race as the Arizona Diamondbacks handed the Chicago Cubs their third straight loss on Saturday at Wrigley Field.

Willy Adames’ Little League Homerun

Willy Adames was like a kid in the candy store when he was in the presence of his idol, Derek Jeter. Eager to meet him, he approached him and was able to have a small chat with him before running out to the dugout, smiling from ear to ear.

Adames kept the energy going as he hit a little league homerun in the top of the fourth inning; After Mark Canha singled, Adames sent a line drive to right field that bounced off the wall and allowed Canha to run home. As Adames made his way to third, a wild throw by D.J. LeMahieu would allow Adames to easily score home and give Milwaukee a 2-0 lead.

Though Adames was responsible for the 2-0 lead in the fourth, he would be charged with three errors on the day. One error in the third, a late toss to Brice Turang in the fourth that tied the game, and another wide throw that could’ve been due to the ball being slippery. Adames told the media that there are no excuses, however.

He also said, “It’s for both sides. I blame myself for the errors — mentally and physically. It was just errors.”

Sal Frelick, Carlos Santana, William Contreras, and Mark Canha all recorded hits in the three-run eighth inning rally.

Starter Wade Miley went just shy of four innings, throwing 84 pitches. Elvis Peguero, Bryse Wilson, and winning pitcher Joel Payamps combined to only allow one hit – a single by Aaron Judge off of Payamps in the seventh inning. Trevor Megill quickly retired the side in the eighth with only five pitches before the Brewers would put on a show in the ninth, scoring four more on four walks, a hit by pitch and two singles. Hoby Milner would close out the game for Milwaukee, and the bullpen would throw 5 1/3 scoreless innings in the game.

Mark Canha currently has a 20-game on base streak.

As the Brewers said, adding Mark Canha to the team was a pretty good decision. Canha has been on base in his last 20 games, has five RBIs, one homer, a stolen base, and is slugging .667. He had four ABs in Saturday’s game where he had one run, two hits, one RBI, and struck out once.

The Brewers look to finish the series and get another sweep over an American League team on Sunday. RHP Corbin Burnes (9-8, 3.63) is on the mound for Milwaukee, and RHP Gerrit Cole (13-4, 2.90) is on the bump for the Yankees. You can watch on Bally Sports Wisconsin or listen on 620 WTMJ.
