NFL: PFF Names Standout Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver as a 2023 Breakout Candidate Because Aaron Rodgers Is Gone

The Green Bay Packers offense is somewhat of an enigma entering the 2023 season. Of course, the biggest reason for this is because Jordan Love has taken over as the starting quarterback following Aaron Rodgers’ trade to the New York Jets. That being said, more and more analysts, former players, and current players are starting to buy into the Love hype.

Another reason why the Packers’ offense is the source of many questions entering the season is due to the youth of the wide receiver room. Love’s pass catchers, including tight ends, are made up of one three-year veteran (Josiah Deguara), three second-year players (Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Samori Toure), and three rookies (Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Malik Heath).

To be sure, there will be plenty of growing pains as the season progresses, but PFF believes that one receiver in particular will thrive because Love is the starting quarterback and not Rodgers.

PFF Believes Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Romeo Doubs Will Thrive without Aaron Rodgers

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs celebrates with fans after scoring a touchdown against the New England Patriots on Oct. 2 at Lambeau Field.

Last season, Doubs had 42 receptions for 425 yards and three touchdowns while playing in 13 games. A sprained ankle caused him to miss four games. Still, it was not a bad year by the standard set by Packers’ rookie wide receivers.

Also last season, Doubs’ teammate Christian Watson had the best season of any Packers rookie wide receiver in the Aaron Rodgers era with 41 receptions, 611 yards, and seven touchdowns.

As has been noted in various publications, former Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers did not take the time to work with or get to know his new pass catchers last year. He himself has admitted this is something he wishes he had done differently. Regrets don’t change the past, though.

It was plain to see how the development of the Packers’ pass catchers, and of Doubs in particular, was hindered by having a quarterback who, while one of the greatest to ever play the game, would not take the time to work with them when they needed it the most.

This is why Sam Monson of PFF believes that Doubs will have a breakout season in 2023. Doubs now has a quarterback he can learn from and grow with:

“While Doubs having Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback seemed like a great thing a year ago, Rodgers has a notoriously hard time trusting and developing instant chemistry with young receivers. Every elite receiver he had in Green Bay (and he had a remarkable run of them from Donald Driver to Greg Jennings to Jordy Nelson to Davante Adams) overlapped and allowed him to develop a rapport with the next guy before the top dog was done barking.

“Last season, Rodgers was forced to rely on a pair of rookies and produce, and it had a negative effect on them all. Jordan Love almost certainly won’t be as good as Rodgers across the board, but he probably won’t have the same hangups about trusting his young receivers and will give them more of a chance to make plays.”

While Love may not be as good as prime Rodgers, it is not hard to see him being as good, if not better than, the 2022 version of Rodgers. His chemistry with Doubs will certainly help.

Reports have stated that Doubs and Love have already formed a strong connection thanks to all the work they did together last offseason and the extra reps they took outside of the facility together this offseason.

The Packers have a long line of famous touchdown connections: Favre-Sharpe, Favre-Freeman, Rodgers-Nelson, Rodgers-Adams. Perhaps Love-Doubs will be the next big thing.
