During the hottest game ever played at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the Wisconsin Badgers started their season against the Buffalo Bulls. The temperature peaked at 91 during the game according to the FS1 Commentary Crew.

The 2023 season is officially underway and the Wisconsin Badgers kicked off the Luke Fickell era with a 38-17 win over the Buffalo Bulls. Even with the dominant win, there was much to be desired. One area of concern was the amount of time Buffalo’s quarterback had in the pocket. That should change soon.
Luke Fickell Says Wisconsin Badgers Transfer Darian Varner Will Play
According to Locked on Badgers Podcast host Ryan Harings, Buffalo had 41 passing attempts on Saturday, however, the Badgers recorded zero sacks. That is very uncharacteristic of a Wisconsin Badgers defense. However, that pass rush may be getting serious help going forward:
Luke Fickell said Darian Varner is “ready to go.” Didn’t look like the Temple transfer played on Saturday. “Everybody that deserves to play will play. Maybe this first one, he didn’t get opportunities based on where the game was.”
Darian Varner began the season recovering from a foot injury. It is widely believed that he will be the best defensive lineman on this roster once he’s in the lineup. Varner is a transfer from Temple University, who recorded 35 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks last season.
There was no question that he was dominant on the field. The Wisconsin defense may have a gem on their hands for the defensive line if he can play a big role this year.
