The day after NFL teams cut their rosters down to their initial 53 is almost as dramatic as the day Green Bay Packers legend Gilbert Brown calls Grim Reaper Day. This is because teams place waiver claims on or sign players that were waived/released by other teams. Due to the addition of new players, others that initially made 53-man rosters have to be waived/released.

Earlier today, it was announced that the Packers placed waiver claims on tight end Ben Sims (Minnesota Vikings) and defensive back Zayne Anderson (Buffalo Bills). Two players that initially made the Packers’ 53-man roster will have to be released to make room for them on the roster.
According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, 2022 seventh round pick Tariq Carpenter is the first player to be released:

Tariq Carpenter’s Time with the Green Bay Packers Has Ended (NFL)

The Packers originally drafted Tariq Carpenter in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He made the team’s 53-man roster last season, though did not see the playing field very often. While playing in 14 games last year, Carpenter played a total of 16 defensive snaps and 122 special teams snaps. Even the number of special teams snaps he saw were only 34% of the total number of plays.
In other words, Carpenter was not used very often on special teams either.
This past offseason, the Packers announced that Carpenter would be making a position switch from safety to linebacker. When Green Bay announced their 53-man roster yesterday, Carpenter made it as a linebacker along with De’Vondre Campbell, Quay Walker, Eric Wilson, and Isaiah McDuffie.
In order to make room for both waiver claims, the Packers will have to release one other player. They have yet to announce who that player will be.
Carpenter may still re-sign with the Packers’ practice squad if they offer and he so chooses.
