Milwaukee Brewers: 1 Former Player Surprisingly Let Go By Los Angeles Angels

The Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Angles struck a trade last off-season that sent outfielder Hunter Renfroe out west in exchange for three pitching prospects.  Elvis Peguero has been Milwaukee’s seventh inning guy this year, Janson Junk has spent the vast majority of the season in the minor leagues, and minor leaguer Adam Seminaris was recently activated after spending three months on the injured list.

At the time of the deal the Angels knew they were receiving Hunter Renfroe for one season in which LA was his fifth organization in as many years.  With Los Angeles falling out of playoff contention, despite being the biggest buyers at the trade deadline, they have let five players go and placed them on waivers.  Hunter Renfroe was one of them.

The other players who were also let go by the Angles include Lucas Giolito, Matt Moore, Reynaldo Lopez, and Randal Grichuk.  This move was made for salary purposes and now teams can put waiver claims in on them.  Claims will be processed as soon as Thursday, August 31, they will be post-season eligible, and the team with the worse record will win the claim should multiple teams submit for any of these players.

This season Hunter Renfroe was having a down season.  At the time of him being let go he had a .239/.300/.425 slash line with 18 home runs and 52 RBI.  His wRC+ was just 95 and his 1.0 fWAR is a lot lower than seasons past when he posted a 2.5 fWAR with the Brewers and 2.0 with the Red Sox.

Despite not performing to the level of seasons past Hunter Renfroe will likely still be claimed by a playoff contending team.  He has post-season experience and could be an impactful addition to a lot of teams.
