The Green Bay Packers are looking to prove to the NFL that Jordan Love is their third franchise quarterback in a row. Love has been impressive during the 2023 pre-season. Over five drives during the first two pre-season games Love has completed 12 of his 18 passing attempts for 130 yards, two touchdowns, zero interceptions, and has yet to take a sack.
The young weapons around Love have Packers fans excited for the future. Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon, Jayden Reed, Luke Musgrave, and Tucker Kraft are the core of this offense going forward. While the excitement for this core is warranted, getting a veteran weapon is never a bad idea. That is where the Carolina Panthers come in.
Green Bay Packers Land Tight End Ian Thomas From The Carolina Panthers In Trade Proposal
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report highlighted why this trade would make sense:
The Carolina Panthers are understandably in the midst of a youth movement on offense. With Bryce Young already named the starting quarterback, Carolina has wisely done a lot to bring in new pass-catchers.
That includes the tight end position, where they signed Hayden Hurst to go with Tommy Tremble and Ian Thomas.
Hurst is obviously going to be the top option, with Tremble and Thomas competing to be the second tight end. Thomas is a solid veteran who has been with the Panthers for five seasons, but he’s already shown his limited ceiling as a receiver. He had 330 yards as a rookie and hasn’t crossed that threshold since.
Tremble is a younger option who is in his third season and still on a rookie contract. He was drafted in the Matt Rhule era, but the coaching staff should still be interested in seeing what they can get out of him.
Thomas would be better suited in a tight end room that doesn’t have a veteran. The Packers would fit that description. Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft will be called upon to play roles as rookies, but Tyler Davis suffered a torn ACL.
Thomas could at least be the veteran presence in the locker room and be a dependable blocker.
What Would This Trade Do For The Packers?
For the amount of stability the Green Bay Packers have had at positions like quarterback and running back, there has been just as much instability at the tight end position. The team has gone the route of adding veterans like Jimmy Graham, Martellus Bennett and Jared Cook.
They have invested some late draft capital into the position as well. However, none of that has brought much production to the position. Brian Gutekunst hoped to change that by drafting Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft early in this year’s draft. While he needs to perform on Sundays, the buzz surrounding Luke Musgrave has been encouraging. Dallin Leavitt even compared Musgrave to the likes of Travis Kelce and Darren Waller.
Thomas is 27 years old and would be a veteran presence with the tight end group that they currently don’t have. The loss of Tyler Davis created a gap on the team that Thomas could more than fill.
