The Green Bay Packers drafted Anders Carlson in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL draft from Auburn University. The young kicker has been struggling to find consistency so far. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers waived Rodrigo Blankenship on Monday. Could the Green Bay Packers look to bring Blankenship onto the team before the season starts?

The Green Bay Packers likely will not target Blankenship

Blankenship was a highly talented kicker at the University of Georgia and also found success in the NFL as a member of the Indianapolis Colts. As a rookie, he went 32 for 37 on field goal attempts and 43 of 45 on extra points. However, he could not follow up a strong rookie year after his season was cut short due to a hip injury just five weeks into the year. The Colts released him in 2022 after missing a game-winning kick against the Houston Texans.

Rodrigo Blankenship spent the summer in Tampa Bay competing for the starting job. Unfortunately, he lost the job to Chase McLaughlin and is now on waivers. He will likely clear waivers and will be free to sign with any team. The Green Bay Packers are a team with a young kicker trying to find his way, and despite his struggles, it is unlikely they will sign Blankenship, barring an injury.

Last week Brian Gutekunst made it very clear that the team will not look to replace Anders Carlson at this time. They will also not bring in any competition at this time. Blankenship will likely be available if the Green Bay Packers need to sign a kicker in case of an injury. At this point in the year, all team either have their kicker or have their candidates in a competition for the starting job. Blankenship may have to wait a while before landing a job with another NFL team.
