Cincinnati Reds: Hunter Greene Gives Up 5 Home Runs And Ties His Own Record

Cincinnati Reds opening day starter Hunter Greene made his much anticipated return to the big league mound against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, August 20.  He has last appeared in a major league game on June 17 and had been on the injured list with hip pain.  Unfortunately his first outing back was very rough.

The box score numbers for Hunter Greene after his first start following a lengthy IL stint was three innings pitched, eight earned runs, five home runs allowed, ten hits, and three walks.  It took him 90 pitches to get to that point and the only inning that Toronto did not score in while he was in the game was the third inning.

One alarming aspect from his start was that he gave up five home runs.  Sadly this is not the first time he has surrendered this many long balls as he previously did this against the Milwaukee Brewers in May of 2022.

Hunter Greene of the Cincinnati Reds surrendered five home runs for the second time in his career.

In May of 2022 he gave up five long balls to Milwaukee Brewers players Luis Urias, Christian Yelich, Willy Adames, Tyrone Taylor, and Keston Hiura.  On Sunday the Blue Jays to go yard against him were Kevin Kiermaier,, Brandon Belt twice, Bo Bichette, and George Springer.

Prior to being placed on the IL Hunter Greene had been working on lowering his ERA.  He had a dreadful month of May in which he gave up 17 earned runs over five starts.  Of those five appearances in May he gave up home runs in four contests with three of them being multi home run games.

It’s clear that the home run ball has both bitten Hunter Greene in the past and continued to do so during his first start back against the Rangers.  Cincinnati did not add any starting pitching at the deadline so they need their flame throwing youngster to deliver some quality performances.
