Former Green Bay Packers Kicker Mason Crosby Named As An Intriguing Option For AFC Contender

Former Green Bay Packers Mason Crosby was recently named by an NFL writer as a possible replacement kicker for an AFC North contender this year.

Many Packers fans are holding out hope Crosby can return to Green Bay this season. That doesn’t seem likely, even after rookie kicker Anders Carlson missed two extra points against the Cincinnati Bengals Friday night in his first preseason game.

Change isn’t easy, but it will be in the Packers’ best interest in the long term to find a kicker that can replace the 38-year-old veteran. However, Crosby can still kick, and he’s on the lookout for an opportunity this season.

Max Dibble with Heavy recently wrote about a possible destination for the kicker. The Cleveland Browns saw their kicker, Cade York, go 0-2 in field goals in their first preseason game. Dibble acknowledged that Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski is publicly backing up York but thinks there could be a change coming behind the scenes with Stefanski on the hot seat:

“While toeing the company line is all well and good when the games don’t count, Browns fans can expect Stefanski’s tune to change quickly if York’s issues continue and end up costing Cleveland wins during a regular season in which the head coach must deliver if he hopes to keep his own job secure.

Given the circumstances, Cleveland should be (and probably is) considering contingency plans if York can’t get himself on track. Kickers come and go all the time in the NFL, though a handful of names have been stalwarts over the past decade or two. Perhaps no specialist embodies that kind of career longevity more than 16-year veteran Mason Crosby.”

Crosby would make sense with the Cleveland Browns

Crosby in Cleveland would make a lot of sense. Crosby has spent his NFL career in the Midwest, so kicking in Ohio’s cold weather shouldn’t be an issue for him.

Crosby has kicked twice (2009 and 2017) for the Packers at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Crosby is 1/2 on field goals there and 7/7 on extra points.

The Browns could use Crosby’s leg for needed points this season. The AFC North will be a competitive division, and much is expected from the Browns with quarterback Deshaun Watson under center for the entire season in 2023.
