NBA rumors: Luka Doncic is one of the top young superstars in the NBA today. As a matter of fact, he’s probably one of the first players that come to mind if you were thinking of building a team around a specific star. This is exactly what the Dallas Mavericks have been doing this past couple of years, but unfortunately for them, they just haven’t found much success on that front.

NBA Rumors: What If Luka Doncic Asks Out?

While the Mavs added a couple of intriguing pieces in the draft, and at the same time made some significant moves in NBA free agency, there’s no denying that their most impactful move this summer centers around Kyrie Irving’s massive extension. They’re not ready to give up on the Kyrie-Luka experiment just yet, but if this backfires this coming season, then Dallas will have a big problem on their hands.

Earlier this year, reports emerged that the Mavs have legitimate “fear” that Doncic could be losing faith in the organization. Could he actually decide to jump ship by demanding a trade in the near future? This isn’t likely to happen any time soon, but if the Mavs have another disastrous season, then this becomes a real possibility.

Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report explores the idea of a potential Luka Doncic blockbuster trade. He questions the talent level of the group the Mavs have currently surrounded Doncic with as well as their capability to potentially add more pieces soon:

“If the Mavs can’t contend with this group, how do they plan on raising their ceiling? Trading for an impact player is a possibility in theory, but they’re already down two first-round picks (top-10 protected in 2024 and unprotected in 2029, plus a 2030 pick swap) and aren’t swimming in high-end prospects, so what’s the centerpiece for this hypothetical exchange?” Buckley wrote.

If you look at it that way, then the Mavs do seem to have a major dilemma looming.

NBA Rumors: Where Could Luka Doncic Land?

If Doncic ever asks out, then you can be sure that the Mavs will expect a major haul in exchange for their cornerstone superstar. Not too many teams out there will have the necessary assets to make a potential blockbuster trade work, but if Doncic all of a sudden becomes available, you can be sure that a handful of teams will be willing to move heaven and earth to get their hands on the four-time All-Star.

Could the defending champs Denver Nuggets be one of those teams? Doncic does have a relationship with fellow European superstar Nikola Jokic, and together, these two could emerge as the most prolific duos in the history of the NBA. The Nuggets could potentially create a package centered around Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr., which will obviously be massive losses for Denver. However, the reward could make it all worth it.
