NBA Star Ricky Rubio Takes Break for Mental Health: A Reminder of Athletes’ Well-being Challenges

Cleveland Cavaliers player Ricky Rubio has decided to take a break from basketball to focus on his Mental Health. He shared this news through the Spanish Basketball Federation on August 5, 2023.

Ricky explained that he needs to take care of his mental well-being and thanked the federation for understanding his decision. He asked for privacy during this time and promised to share more information when he feels ready.

Ricky Rubio, who is 32 years old, returned to the game last season after an ACL injury. He played 33 games for the Cavaliers and had an average of 5.2 points, 3.5 assists, and 1.8 rebounds per game. He has been a seasoned point guard, playing for four NBA teams since being drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2009.

Ricky is also a key player for the Spanish national team and helped them win the gold medal at the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China. He was named the tournament’s MVP for leading Spain to an undefeated victory with an average of 16.4 points, 6 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game.

His decision to prioritize his mental health highlights the importance of mental well-being in professional sports. It shows that athletes face not only physical challenges but also mental and emotional ones. Ricky’s teammates, coaches, fans, and fellow players have expressed their support and respect for his choice.

At the moment, there is no clear timeline for his return to basketball. However, Ricky’s courage in seeking help for his mental health is commendable. We wish him all the best and hope to see him back on the court when he’s ready.
