Some disappointing news about ace pitcher Shane Bieber has reached the Cleveland Guardians. According to MLB.com’s Mandy Bell, the right-hander has been moved from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL with elbow inflammation. He earned the American League Cy Young Award in 2020.

Mandy @MandyBell02 Bell The Protectors have placed Shane Bieber on 60 days of indefinite leave. Both LHP Tim Herrin and LHP Daniel Norris have been recalled from Triple-A. 1100 – July 24, 2023 – 3:30 PM Twitter’s Ads Policy and Data Security A total of 173 people are discussing this. The Protectors have officially placed Shane Bieber on a 60-day IL. Due to the mandatory 60-day absence beginning on the date of Bieber’s initial IL placement (July 12), the singer will be sidelined until at least September 10. Inflammation in Bieber’s right elbow has plagued him since mid-June, when he initially felt pain while pitching against the Seattle Mariners.

On July 17, Bieber had an MRI done on his elbow, and the results showed no signs of structural damage or the need for surgery. After an original estimate of two to three weeks out of commission, his recuperation time has exceeded expectations. He hasn’t started throwing again, but when he does, he’ll need to work on strengthening his arm.

The loss of Bieber is devastating for the Guardians as they fight to maintain a postseason berth in the American League. They are presently three games behind the first-place Minnesota Twins and two games behind the second-place Chicago White Sox in the American League Central. For the second wild card berth, they are four games behind the Oakland Athletics.

With a 5-6 record, 3.77 ERA, and 157 strikeouts in 119 innings this season, Bieber has been the star of the Guardians’ rotation. He is in the top 10 in the American League for ERA+, WHIP, and FIP and leads the league in strikeouts and innings thrown. This year was his second consecutive selection to the All-Star team, however an injury prevented him from playing.

The Guardians will need Aaron Civale, Zach Plesac, Cal Quantrill, and J.C. Mejia, among others, to step up in Bieber’s absence. At the trade deadline, they also acquired left-handed reliever Daniel Norris from the Detroit Tigers.
