POSITION SUMMARY:

The Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for providing safe group exercise programs, planning fun choreographed routines, connecting with participants, and communicating with the Wellness Director for excellence in the YMCA Group exercise programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:

To develop a continually increasing standard of excellence as directed by the Wellness Director in accordance

with YMCA goals and policies in the following areas:

  1. Connect with current and new members by way of a caring and helpful attitude.
  2. Ensure that communication is effective, efficient and contributes to the team environment.
  3. Ensure that all complaints, concerns, suggestions, and praises are addressed professionally and in a manner that is consistent with YMCA core values and responded to as quickly as possible, but not longer than 24 hours.
  4. Always convey the YMCA culture of friendliness, compassion, and knock-your-socks-off customer service as measured by periodic surveys.
  5. Ensure the YMCA's mission, goals, facilities, programs, and benefits are always positively communicated.
  6. Provide fun, challenging routines according to the class description.
  7. Come to each class with a developed routine that provides both cardio and strength training according to the class description.
  8. Provide heart rate monitoring in each class as requested.
  9. Ensure that areas in public view and storage areas are neat and clean.
  10. Ensure YMCA safety and cleanliness are conducted in a way that prevents any risk of injury or damage.
  11. Ensure the proper and safe use of equipment and supplies.
  12. Establish and maintain a secure inventory of first aid supplies.
  13. Ensure that each emergency response is immediate and according to established policy.
  14. Ensure that all equipment is inspected daily and documented to be safe.
  15. Maintain room and equipment appearance.
  16. Connect with and assist participants.
  17. Ensure available information is accurately updated for members, volunteers, potential members, and staff.
  18. Become knowledgeable about YMCA programs such that accurate information can be given to YMCA members and participants.
  19. Communicate in a manner that is effective, efficient, and contributes to the team environment.
  20. Provide all information in a friendly and professional manner as measured by surveys.
  21. Report any maintenance problems in writing immediately after class.
  22. Accurately complete an incident/accident report for each occurrence and submit and report it in accordance with staff training.
  23. Maintain neat and accurate attendance.
  24. Whatever else may be needed to further the YMCA movement.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Be at least 18 years old and be in good physical condition.
  • Be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Possess a YMCA Group Exercise Instructor certificate or have the willingness to acquire the training within 6 months of employment.
  • Be able to maintain a positive attitude at all times, be reliable, willing to learn, and have the ability to resolve problems and conflicts.
  • Be passionate about the YMCA mission and vision and must personally advocate and demonstrate the core values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.
  • Demonstrate solid leadership as demonstrated by a high level of loyalty and respect among those this person leads.
  • Have CPR and First Aid Certification prior to or within 60 days of employment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer for extended periods of time and be able to communicate using a computer and phone/smart device.
  • The employee frequently is required to sit and reach and must be able to move around the work environment.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Note - All persons interested in being a member of the YMCA staff must follow DART.
