Game Recap 4/24/24 | Guardians Lose to the Red Sox 8-0

Post-Game Recap

3 Things Around The Game

1 – Cookie

Carlos Carrasco did not have his best tonight and was punished by the Red Sox, giving up five runs over five innings.

2 – Limited hitting

A rarity in 2024, the Cleveland Guardians only had one runner in scoring position, Jose Ramirez, who hit a double in the 6th inning with two outs.

3 – Pedro Avila

Pedro Avila debuted for the Guardians, going three innings, giving up two earned while striking out two.

Game Summary

Connor Wong smashed two home runs, while Rafael Devers marked his return to Boston’s lineup with a homer, propelling the injury-plagued Red Sox to an 8-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday night.

Wong led off the second and sixth innings with home runs off Carlos Carrasco (1-2). He later contributed an RBI single in the ninth inning, amassing four hits for the night.

Devers, sidelined for the previous five games due to a knee bone bruise, launched a homer in the fifth inning as part of Boston’s offensive onslaught, which included 16 hits, stifling the hottest team in baseball with a dominant shutout.

Rookie outfielder Wilyer Abreu also made his mark with four hits and an RBI, contributing to Boston’s second shutout victory against Cleveland in a week.

The Guardians saw their five-game winning streak halted, falling short of matching their 1966 franchise record for the best start through 24 games.

With injuries sidelining three starters and the rotation in disarray, Red Sox manager Alex Cora relied on his bullpen to navigate through the game. Rookie Cooper Criswell (1-1) delivered five scoreless innings in his fourth career start, allowing only three singles before Joely Rodríguez and Zack Kelly closed out the combined four-hit shutout.

Ahead of the game, the Red Sox placed starter Brayan Bello on the injured list due to lat tightness, adding to the team’s injury woes this season.

Wong, who boasted a .393 batting average with three homers against Cleveland, extended his dominance with his fourth homer of the season in the second inning, giving Boston an early 2-0 lead.

The Red Sox capitalized on Carrasco’s struggles, scoring a run in the first inning as Devers singled and later scored on Abreu’s two-out RBI double.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Gavin Williams (elbow) received an anti-inflammatory injection after suffering a setback in his recovery. Williams, who was expected to have a major role this season, felt soreness following a three-inning simulated game last weekend. Williams got hurt throwing a weighted ball in March. He won’t throw for at least one week before being re-evaluated.

UP NEXT

Triston McKenzie (2-2, 5.00 ERA) will start the series finale and the Red Sox will likely have another bullpen game – unless they make a roster move.
