3 Things Around The Game

1 – Another Cleveland Comeback!

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the 7th, the Guardians started their comeback with a lead-off double from Will Brennan, followed by a Tyler Freeman RBI single to tie it, and then after back-to-back walks, Brayan Rocchio’s sac fly to give Cleveland the lead for good.  

2 – Lively 

Ben Lively did not get the win, but did pitch a quality start going 6 1/3 innings only giving up one run while striking out seven.

3 – 8th inning 

Cleveland made sure to not doubt with Jose Ramirez hitting a home run and Estevan Florial with an RBI double in the 8th to finish off the Red Sox.

Game Summary

Tyler Freeman and Bryan Rocchio drove in runs in the seventh inning, breaking Cleveland’s scoreless streak against Boston’s Tanner Houck. José Ramírez also contributed with a home run as the Guardians maintained their impressive start, clinching a 4-1 victory over the Red Sox on Tuesday night.

Houck, who previously threw a three-hit shutout against the Guardians, kept them at bay for six innings before Freeman’s run-scoring single and Rocchio’s sacrifice fly changed the momentum.

Ramírez’s homer came in the eighth inning against Cam Booser, marking his fourth of the season.

The Guardians’ strong performance extends their winning streak to five games, securing the best record in the majors at 17-6, a feat previously achieved by the franchise in 1999 and 1966.

Wilyer Abreu managed a home run for the Red Sox, but their offense struggled against Ben Lively for six innings.

Lively’s debut at Progressive Field was impressive, allowing only one run and five hits over 6 1/3 innings, with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Scott Barlow, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase closed out the game for the Guardians, with Clase earning his seventh save.

Freeman’s RBI single in the seventh finally broke Houck’s scoreless streak against Cleveland, after Will Brennan’s leadoff double set the stage. Houck’s control faltered as he walked Estevan Florial, prompting Red Sox manager Alex Cora to bring in Brennan Bernardino, who struggled to contain the Guardians’ offense.

Manager Stephen Vogt acknowledged the challenge of facing Houck again but hoped for better opportunities, which materialized in the seventh inning.

Tyler O’Neill returned to the Red Sox lineup after recovering from a collision with Rafael Devers last week, marking his first game back after sustaining a concussion and requiring stitches for a head injury.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Gavin Williams (elbow) has not yet met with the team’s medical staff to determine the next step in his rehab. Williams pitched three innings on Saturday in Arizona without any issues before flying to Cleveland. “We’re happy to have him with us,” manager Stephen Vogt said. Williams hurt his elbow throwing a weighted ball in March.

UP NEXT

Carlos Carrasco (1-1, 3.44) faces the Red Sox after beating them last week for his first win with Cleveland since 2020. Boston had not yet announced a starter.
