Game Recap 4/13/24 | Guardians Lose to the Yankees 3-2 GM 1 DH

Post-Game Recap

3 Things Around The Game

1 – 9th Inning frustration

The Guardians had opportunities to win the game in the 9th after Ramon Laureano hit a lead-off double, but sadly for our Guards, back-to-back strikeouts with Bo Naylor on a check swing and with Estevan Florial killed the rally.  In the case Florial, it appeared to be a ball that would have put him on first with a walk.  Brayan Rocchio ended the game with a ground out.

2 – Cookie

Carlos Carrasco was only able to go 4 2/3 innings, forcing Guardians manager Stephan Vogt to put the bullpen in again early.  Nick Sandlin relieved Cooke and gave up a home run to Oswaldo Cabrera, which ended up being the difference in the game.  Length will be key in game two for the Guardians with Triston McKenzie on the bump.

3 – RISP

A stat that has led to the early success of Cleveland has been hitting with runners in scoring position, but on Saturday afternoon they went 0 for 9.

Game Summary

In the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, Oswaldo Cabrera’s two-run homer propelled the New York Yankees to a narrow 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians, matching their best start in franchise history. The Yankees, now boasting an MLB-leading 11-3 record (7-1 on the road), have reached this mark only 11 times before, last achieving it in 2010.

Starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt (1-0) held the Guardians to just one run over five-plus innings before handing the ball to the bullpen. The relievers, including Caleb Ferguson, Ian Hamilton, and closer Clay Holmes, secured the win despite a ninth-inning scare, with Holmes notching his sixth save of the season.

Cabrera’s decisive homer in the sixth inning off reliever Nick Sandlin extended the Yankees’ lead to 3-0. However, Cleveland fought back, scoring two runs in the sixth inning after a wild relay throw from Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres.

Carlos Carrasco (0-1), making his first start in Cleveland since 2020, limited the Yankees to one run over 4 2/3 innings despite issuing five walks. Carrasco’s last appearance in Cleveland was in Game 2 of the AL wild-card series in 2020, before he was traded to the Mets as part of the Francisco Lindor deal.

TRAINER’S ROOM

RHP Gavin Williams (elbow soreness) will pitch a two-inning simulated game on Monday in Arizona. Williams got hurt while throwing a weighted ball in spring training before a start on March 9. The team initially thought he would only miss a week.

UP NEXT

Yankees RHP Cody Poteet makes his season and New York debut in Game 2 against Guardians RHP Triston McKenzie (1-1 4.00), who pitched 5 2/3 scoreless inning in Monday’s home opener.
