Game Recap 4/13/24 | Guardians Lose to the Yankees 8-2 Game 2 DH

Post-Game Recap

3 Things Around The Game

1 – 30 Pitches

It took Triston McKenzie 30 pitches to get out of the first inning, which was set up by an Andres Gimenez error that should have been a double-play ball. The Yankees would go on to score two in the first, setting the tone for the game.

2 – McKenzie struggles

McKenzie continued to struggle, especially in the 4th when he walked the first two batters and then, after getting the next two out, gave up an RBI single to Anthony Volpe and then a three-run bomb to Juan Suto, giving the Yankees a six-run lead.

McKenzie ended up going four innings, giving up six runs, five earned while striking out only one with six walks.

3 – Florial

Estevan Florial did have a solo shot in the 5th inning against his former club.  It was Florial’s first home run in a Guardians uniform.

Game Summary

In the doubleheader sweep against the Cleveland Guardians, the New York Yankees showcased their dominance with Juan Soto’s three-run homer and Cody Poteet’s impressive pitching debut, securing an 8-2 victory in the second game. The Yankees had already claimed the opener with a 3-2 win.

This season, the Yankees have stormed to a 12-3 record, marking their seventh such start and the first since 2003, when they embarked on one of their many World Series journeys. Their road record stands at an impressive 8-1.

Soto, acquired in the offseason trade from San Diego, demonstrated his value by connecting off Triston McKenzie in the fourth inning, contributing to McKenzie’s struggles on the mound. Meanwhile, Poteet, who hadn’t pitched in the majors since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2022, delivered a stellar performance, allowing just one run over six innings to earn his first win since 2021.

While the Guardians found little solace in their defeat, Estevan Florial’s homer in the fifth inning and Josh Naylor’s contribution provided some consolation. However, their efforts couldn’t prevent the Yankees’ relentless march to victory.

In the opener, the Yankees relied on Oswaldo Cabrera’s two-run homer and a solid bullpen performance to secure a 3-2 win. Despite a tense ninth inning, closer Clay Holmes held on for his sixth save of the season.

Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco, making his first start in Cleveland since 2020, delivered a commendable performance in Game 1, holding the Yankees to just one run over 4 2/3 innings. Reflecting on his return, Carrasco expressed emotional sentiments about pitching once again in Cleveland.

TRAINER’S ROOM

UP NEXT

Yankees LHP Nestor Cortes (1-1, 3.50 ERA) starts the series finale against LHP Logan Allen (2-0, 4.60). Cortes pitched eight scoreless innings in his previous outing against Miami.
