Game Recap 9/10/23 | Guardians Lose To The Angels 2-1

Post-Game Live Recap

3 Things About Guardians Loss To The Angels:

1 – 8 to 3

The Guardians outhit the Angels eight to three, yet Cleveland could not score more than one run, a big reason why the Guardians lost again in LA.

 2 – Balk?

Two back-to-back balk calls against Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee in the bottom of the 3rd inning ended up being a big difference in the game as the runner Kyren Paris would later score on a groundout.  Bibee and manager Terry Francona contested both calls, which did not appear to be balks on either occasion.  Poor Guards.

3 – Injury Updates

Shane Bieber and Triston McKenzie will start rehab assignments later this week it was announced by the club.

Game Summary

In Sunday’s game, Kenny Rosenberg secured his inaugural career win by limiting the Cleveland Guardians to just one run over five innings, as the Los Angeles Angels held on for a 2-1 victory.

Mike Moustakas and Randal Grichuk contributed an RBI each for the Angels. They capitalized on two balk calls against Guardians’ starter Tanner Bibee during the third inning. Cleveland ended up losing three out of four games in the series and currently trails the first-place Minnesota team by 7 1/2 games in the AL Central division.

Angels’ designated hitter Shohei Ohtani remained sidelined for the seventh consecutive game due to an oblique strain. However, Los Angeles manager Phil Nevin expressed optimism that Ohtani would make his return on Monday when the team faces Seattle.

Kole Calhoun, formerly with the Angels, hit a home run for the Guardians, his fourth in 29 games since being acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for cash. Of his 177 career home runs, 73 have been hit at Angel Stadium. Bibee (10-4) pitched seven innings, allowing only two hits without issuing any walks. The rookie from nearby Mission Viejo retired 14 straight batters and recorded eight strikeouts in his first appearance at Angel Stadium.

Rosenberg (1-1) conceded six hits and one walk during his performance. The Angels’ relief pitchers, including Andrew Wantz, Ben Joyce, Jimmy Herget, and Carlos Estévez, each delivered a scoreless inning, with Estévez notching his 30th save.

The Angels took an initial 1-0 lead in the first inning when Grichuk doubled, advanced to third on a groundout by Brandon Drury, and then scored on Moustakas’ sacrifice fly.

Calhoun responded for the Guardians in the second inning with his fourth home run since joining the team. Calhoun’s history at Angel Stadium has seen him hit 73 of his 177 career home runs there.

In the third inning, the Angels regained a 2-1 lead as Kyren Paris singled, advanced to second and third on Bibee’s two balks, and eventually scored on Grichuk’s groundout.

Bibee engaged in multiple animated discussions with second base umpire Pat Hoberg, who had made the balk calls. The right-hander also conversed with first base umpire Brian O’Nora after the inning. After those discussions, Bibee locked in and retired 14 consecutive batters through the seventh inning.
