Mets To Call Up Top Pitching Prospect Christian Scott

The New York Mets are set to promote top pitching Prospect Christian Scott to their MLB roster as the team prepares for a stretch of 26 games in 27 days.

Scott, the organization’s 5th ranked prospect, had a strong April in Triple-A Syracuse, posting a 3-0 record with a 3.20 ERA, 0.71 WHIP, and 36Ks across 25.1IP. The 6’4″ right hander is one of the most exciting pitching prospects the organization has had in recent years, and is in line to make his debut vs. the Rays on Saturday.

“We feel like he’s ready,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “He deserves it. He’s earned it the way he’s been throwing the ball.”

“I think it’s a credit to him mostly, and then also our player development system recognizing his capabilities,” pitching coach Jeremy Hefner said, “and preparing him for this moment.”

Originally selected in the 5th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, Scott was a highly coveted reliever with the University of Florida, but was quickly converted to a started after being selected by New York. He, along with Mike Vasil and Dom Hamel, began the season in the minors with the expectation that one of them would separate themselves from the pack for an early season promotion.

“His stuff’s incredible,” said Scott’s former Syracuse teammate Danny Young, a fellow University of Florida alumnus. “He’s mature. He’s got a plan.”

Featuring an above average four-seam fastball, the 24 year old recently developed a sweeper to complement his hard slider, which have allowed him to take the next step developmentally in short order. While New York plans to operate with a 6-man rotation for the time being, Scott could carve out a permanent role in the rotation with a strong showing.

As it currently stands, Adrian Houser (8.16 ERA) has struggled mightily to start to the 2024 campaign. If he’s unable to turn things around, Scott could become a viable option for the remainder of the season. However, with Tylor Megill (right shoulder strain), Kodai Senga (right shoulder capsule strain) and David Peterson (recovery from left hip surgery) all due to return to the lineup over the next month, Scott will only be guaranteed one start for now.
