Manchester United In The Market For A Luke Shaw Replacement

Reports: Manchester United identify two candidates as Luke Shaw replacement

Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a move for Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur outcasts Marc Cucurella and Sergio Reguilon, respectively.

With Luke Shaw understood to be out for up to two months or more after enduring  a muscular injury and young full-back Brandon Williams having completed a season-long loan move to Ipswich Town, the Red Devils are in the market for a left-back.

Given that there’s just under a week left before the transfer window slams shut, they’ve identified two full-backs with considerable Premier League experience – for a loan deal.

“It can be [possibility of signing a left-back]. I think we always have to anticipate on situations. If there are opportunities then yes, but it has to be the right player otherwise we have to deal with the current squad. We went through the scenarios before the season and if it happened, we have the solution,” said Erik ten Hag, when questioned if there will be a new arrival in the Manchester United defense.

As reported, the Premier League giants have shortlisted no fewer than three names for their newest short-term fix.

Marc Cucurella, who was pried away from Brighton and Hove Albion for a whopping £62 million, has slipped down the pecking order under new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino’s regime.

Ben Chilwell has donned the armband in the latest pair of PL fixtures, while Ian Maatsen came off the bench instead of Cucurella in the Blues’ 3-0 thumping of newcomers Luton Town.

Yet, it’s worth noting that there have been no concrete talks despite United knocking on Chelsea’s door to understand the conditions of the deal.

Meanwhile, Reguilon has fallen out of favor with the Spurs since April 2022 and would be desperate to resurrect his career after a disappointing loan spell at Atletico Madrid.

Still just 26, Reguilon was on United’s radar before they eventually signed Alex Telles in 2020. Diogo Dalot filled in at left-back against Nottingham Forest and was second-rate at best; his defensive attributes continuing to diminish his stocks in the league.

Ten Hag’s charges had a let off against Wolves when a supposed blatant penalty wasn’t given, while they narrowly escaped humiliation against Nottingham Forest after going down 2-0 inside the first four minutes.

They’ll hope to have beefed up their squad as a trip to the Emirates awaits two days after the transfer period wraps up.
